DESCRIPTION
The Quasar Fire-class bulk cruiser is a light starfighter carrier originally manufactured by the SoroSuub Corporation for the Galactic Empire. One of the more common sub-star destroyer capital ships operated by the Empire, the Quasar Fire bore an at least superficial resemblance to its much larger cousins, but was nowhere near as large or well armed. The type was primarily used as a local command ship, and to support starfighter operations, providing a mobile base for refueling and repair, as well as a method of transporting light craft such as the TIE/LN starfighter through hyperspace.

Though classified officially as a "bulk cruiser," a common term for a multi-role capital ship that can fight and carry cargo, the Quasar Fire would more correctly be referred to as a frigate under the Anaxes War College category system.

The Quasar Fire was a versatile ship for its time. Though not well armed for its size, possessing only a pair of dual light turbolasers in forward-facing casemate mounts, the type could carry up to 48 starfighters and 4 support craft, usually shuttles or similarly sized craft. Up to 4 other ships could dock externally as well. The Quasar Fire had a crew of 250, and could carry up to 100 passengers and 2,000 tons of cargo. It had consumable sufficient for up to a year in space.

Quasar Fire production was separated into 2 variants, the Quasar Fire I and Quasar Fire II. The I variant was the subject of a minor scandal; the type's space-frame was discovered to be susceptible to micro-fractures when reverting from hyperspace to realspace, eventually leading to structural failure. A handful of Quasar Fire Is were lost in this manner, and the type was declared unsafe in a report by the Mid-Rim Shipwrights' Guild. This was theorized by some in the Empire to have been an attempt to sabotage the Imperial fleet by SoroSuub engineers in charge of the design process, and although an investigation was launched, no culprits were ever identified. The Quasar Fire II was subsequently designed, eliminating the structural fault, and all existing Quasar Fire Is in Imperial service were subsequently retrofitted to match the new standard. Most Quasar Fires which have survived into the present day are of the Quasar Fire II variant.

The Quasar Fire-class bulk cruiser is an elderly vessel in the present day, and though it is no longer produced by SoroSuub, it can still be found in service with many local defense militias, sector defense fleets and even some pirates. It is easier to get hold of than some other, more modern carriers.

LEGALITY
Restricted. Quasar Fire-class bulk cruisers are classified as capital ships under Galactic law, and possess heavy weapons. As such, civilian owners will require extra licensing to operate one legally, and will receive increased scrutiny by authorities.

INTENT
To create a standard light carrier.

RESTRICTIONS
Quasar Fire-class bulk cruisers, as a capital ship, cannot be owned or operated by individual characters. They can be acquired as a faction asset, however.
