Biography
Darmus was born on Boonta as the third child to a pair of ambitious podracers that lacked the skill to be great. They were enthusiasts of the game and worshiped the better racers as they groomed Darmus' older siblings to become racers as well. Unfortunately, Darmus didn't share their love for racing and instead spend his time slicing systems and observing not the races, but the racers.

He was barely fourteen when he decided to expose racers that had installed illegal boosters on their pods, knowing fully well that one of those racers was his sister. As cheating was common and those who did it blatantly often protected by the Hutts, the only casualty turned out to be the sister, whose career was ruined. There wasn't a bigger crime he could've committed in the eyes of his parents, ruining his sister's mediocre podracing career, and a forthnight later they kicked him out, finding it unbearable to live under the same roof. They suggested mockingly that if he really cared that much, that he should join the Sector Rangers.

The ranger of the Suolriep Sector, to which Boonta belonged, was unimpressed with the young human that never even fired a blaster, but he also recognized the dangerous situation of having exposed cheaters on a world filled with podracing fanatics. The ranger thus shipped him off to Coruscant, where Darmus was enrolled in the police academy.

Graduating as a Net-expert, the young human worked in the anti-gang unit for three years with mixed success. Gangs were as common on Coruscant as cheaters had been on Boonta and despite their best efforts the gangs persisted. Not only the uselessness of his job, but also the life on a city-world seemed to drag on him as he missed the open plains. Thus, when the Sector Rangers finally came recruiting he eagerly accepted.

For the twenty years since he has roamed the Outer Rim, hunting down murderers and thieves and getting good at it. Still, Darmus knew that catching a murderer didn't make a difference. It was the underworld support system you needed to eliminate. He believed that without the slicers to facilitate them, criminals would become less effective, less persistent and more importantly more likely to spend decades on prison ships.

While on a routine mission with the rookie agent Corran Velt, Darmus was shot three times are relatively close range. He was forced to hand over all his open cases to other rangers while he recuperated with regular bacta treatments in a facility on Coruscant. During this time the -later revealed- Sith Order attacked the and blew up the prison on Corellia, killing almost everyone just to rescue the man that had previously slaughtered a ranger office. Darmus had considerable trouble getting his head around all the high-level threat the Sector Rangers were now facing on top of the grief of losing friends he'd known for two decades.

The Ranger Service was becoming more akin to a para-military group, not focused on ordinary crime anymore and instead taking on the same role as the mysterious Jedi Order; that of peacekeepers against the big evil. Darmus thoroughly disagreed with this course and not only because it would endanger more and more rangers to violent and unavoidable deaths, but because war, which this was, was meant to be fought by the military and not the lone ranger.

Despite his personal view on the direction of the service, Darmus joined a rescue mission to a pirate station after the ranger's initial assault had failed. Here is lack of military training and he general apprehension towards using firearms resulted in horrible repercussions. Trying to negotiate with the pirates he had ordered the specialist squad not to engage only for the pirates to take advantage and kill two rangers in cold blood. He lost his nerve there and the trust of his fellow rangers afterwards. Upon return to Coruscant, Darmus was reassigned permanently to tech support.

He had been at work when the ranger headquarters on Coruscant got attacked. He had seen almost all of his colleagues die, witnessed how the service crumbled and the Chief almost died. To make it worse, the raid on the evidence vault had overturned so many convictions that the lower levels of Coruscant were once again completely overrun with hardened criminals. Darmus tried his best to monitor them all, but he was not such losing the battle, the rangers were losing the war. At least the stress, lack of sleep and undernourishment had made him lose over 10 kilo's... it was the little things..

It took him a long time but finally he managed to return many of those hardened criminals back to prison. The arrest rate on Coruscant was at an all-time high, yet wherever you went on the city-world it looked like the syndicate-backed gangs still owned the streets. If he had even made a dent with all his hard work it was hardly even noticeable.

With the help of Lieutenant Corran Velt, Darmus managed to track down a criminal adversary on the HoloNet and replaced the elusive slicer by joining the slicer's collective KnowOnes under the man's alias. It took a lot of skill an energy to keep up with the other slicers and succeed in his undercover ruse, but being part of the KnowOnes meant he had front row seats to getting evidence on corrupt politicians and local Five Syndicate ringleaders. Even then he still didn't seem to make a real dent.

It wasn't long after that he found himself approached by a Czerka representative. The mega-corporation had somehow heard, and maybe even seen, his custom-built dataplague and they offered him a lot of credits to commit some corporate espionage and become a fixer of sorts for their galaxy-spanning operations. Until a few years ago he would've spit in their faces, but after all that had happened.. he was old, cranky, tired and above all his devotion to justice was shaking.

So yes, he decided to earn some extra credits doing Czerka's dirty work on the side. At least he was finally able to afford several good meals and perhaps more importantly: the good liquor. Consider it retiring money.

Eventually, through his dataplague he managed to track down the perpetrators of the massacre on ranger headquarters and followed them with a proper ranger posse to Nar Shaddaaa. It wasn't easy to survive on the zombie-infested lower levels of the Smuggler's Moon, not at his age anyway, but if they succeeded it could finally return some of that sense of justice that was quickly slipping in his twilight years.

Personality
With almost thirty years on the job, Darmus thinks he has seen it all. A Sector Ranger's life isn't usually a particularly long one, showing that of all methods that are available Darmus prefers to choose the one where there's the least risk to his person. Other rangers have called him craven and mocked him while they risked their lives and he provided back-up through the net. Which is probably the reason that he is currently the only ranger about to turn fifty that has not at least been promoted to veteran ranger.

He is a know-it-all, always twisting his words so he can claim that he was right all along. Quick to alienate the people around him, Darmus still seems content with his solitary lifestyle. Perhaps that's because that's all he's ever known...
