DESCRIPTION
Hyperdrive, the technology which allows a starship to skip outside of normal reality and cross vast distances by traversing a mysterious dimension known as hyperspace, has been known at least for millennia in the Galaxy at large. Along with hyperdrive, astrogation computers - commonly called navicomputers - have been known for almost as long. The very first navicomputers were Force-derived creations, made using ancient magics and alchemical formulae. Later, conventional science created giant machines which could be housed only aboard the largest star cruisers, and which cost the equivalent of a mid-tier planet's quarterly GDP. From these almost prehistoric behemoths have come significant advancements, and now machines capable of calculating paths through other dimensions of space are cheap and portable enough to be built into starfighters or carried inside small droids.

Not all spacecraft are equipped with a navicomputer, but they can be fitted relatively easily, and dedicated navicomputers are considered a more reliable alternative to using an astromech droid; they can replace an astromech socket, or be fitted to a ship not previously equipped with any astrogation systems. The power requirements of running a navicomputer are significant, however, resulting in a -5 MGLT penalty to sublight performance for as many rounds as it takes to calculate a jump.

LEGALITY
Legal. Not being an offensive weapon, installation of a navicomputer is unrestricted in most of the Galaxy.

INTENT
To create an astrogation upgrade for starships.
