DESCRIPTION
The 4UM-series pilot droid is a specialized automaton manufactured by Duwani Mechanical Products. Designed to fly space and atmospheric craft, 4UM units, despite their rather homely, drum-shaped appearance, have programmed skills and reflexes comparable to an organic pilot. Though not designed to be superior to living pilots, they are an acceptable substitute in most situations.

4UM units have a simple design, mainly consisting of a large turret-style body balanced on a wheeled monopod. Though they do not carry the myriad of tools and other equipment found in astromech droids, 4UMs pack in extra cognitive hardware in their place, and are still equipped with up to 4 retractable manipulator arms and a computer probe for direct interface with a ship or other vehicle's systems. 4UM droids, like astromechs, can perform hyperspace calculations on their own, and can fit into the droid sockets of most vessels which are so equipped. They can also fly from a ship's cockpit, although they cannot use seating intended for organics. Single-seat vessels with no droid socket most be modified in order to accommodate a 4UM, which mainly involves removing the pilot seat.

In most situations, 4UMs are adequate pilots. They are not strictly intended for combat situations, but can fight if necessary, being able to handle turrets and evasive maneuvers well enough to get by; there have been reports of 4UMs flying starfighters. 4UMs excel as co-pilots, paired either with an organic pilot or another droid.

LEGALITY
