    TATOOINE

    GREAT CHOTT SALT FLAT

    -Rendezvous Point-

    THEME

The sands of Tatooine's deserts, still simmering from a long day of unbearable heat, began to cool as the twin suns of the planet neared the horizon. In the space of the next hour the temperature was expected to drop below freezing as night descended on the surface. At this time of the day, an almost serene silence was present across the desert, interrupted every so often by a strong wind that would spur the sands into the air resulting in painful abrasions for those without protective clothing.

The rebel duo was sent to rescue a teenage hostage from the captivity of this cult had planned to meet at a rendezvous point several hundred meters from the complex itself high up on a nearby dune, far enough away to avoid detection and too close to continue on vehicles. Moisture farms were scattered across the immediate area with a main complex of buildings standing isolated from any nearby settlement. This building was without a doubt once a large farmstead now turned headquarters for the cult Eternity's Gate.

    ----------------

Valerie arrived at the rendezvous point a fair bit earlier than required in an attempt to gather as much information as possible before the op began. She donned a beige overall that melded in well with the sandy terrain as well as had her signature goggles pulled down over her eyes to protect them from the incessant winds. She lifted them momentarily to peer through her macrobinoculars and survey the mission scene once again. There did not seem to be too much activity around the area however that observation wasn't much to go on. Who knows how many cultists are in there, she thought to herself. She shuddered, there was something about cults that Valerie found creepy. In her head she imagined them as blood worshiping zealots that sacrificed victims to some inane power. That was unlikely to be the case however.

Valerie lowered the macrobinoculars and stashed it in one of her pockets before sitting back against the dunes and doing one final check of her gear before waiting patiently for her assigned partner. Her hand passed lightly over the two blasters holstered on her waist and once over her trusty wrench. Many would argue that bringing a wrench on such a mission would be folly but they failed to understand how many times said wrench got Valerie out of a tricky situation.

Omnis' own trek to the meeting point was uneventful, as he had gone out of the way to make it that way. Common travel, common clothing, he looked just like any other tourist to the planet. He'd even made a show of behaving as one, as his wallet now felt with the overpriced souvenir now in his hotel room. When it was time he slipped in to his sand-colored camouflage fatigues and jacket. This time his yellow hair would blend in, but he brought a hat anyway. Lastly he made sure he had all his usual weapons, though he did his best to hide everything under his outfit so that he would seem as peaceful as possible. Walk softly but carry a big stun rod, as his father would sometimes jokingly say. He took extra time to make sure he wasn't seen or followed as he made his way to where he was to meet his companion.

"Hey there, sorry if I'm late. At least there shouldn't be any surprises from the outside." Omnis smiled and extended his hand to the young woman. "I'm Omnis and I'll be your backup. Let's save ourselves a civilian." Already hunkered down to observe the compound, he got as good a look as he could without sticking out. "Any idea how many there are? Maybe a layout of the building? Also, what does our target look like? The mission details I got were a bit vague. Don't want to hurt the wrong guy." He gave her a warm smile as he turned back to her, waiting for the answers if they were there. Regardless, even if she knew nothing, he was ready to go to hell and back with his fellow Rebel.

Valerie remained seated within the minute amount of shade that the dune provided until her partner arrived. Fairly short, male, blonde hair. Yep, he checks all the boxes, she thought to herself. Valerie quickly sprang to her feet to properly introduce herself to the other rebel, "The name's Valerie Tagge." She exclaimed with a flourish of her hand. It seemed that pleasantries would have to wait as Omnis would get straight down to business which she understood, there was little time to spare in a case such as this. "Yes well, I did a fair bit of reconnaissance work before you two arrived and from what I can see there can't be more than two guards patrolling the exterior of the building. Information from local farmers suggest that these types of buildings have spacious underground cellars and if I could guess, that's where I think they would keep the hostage." She paused, "The boy was described as having darkly tanned skin with scrawny features and dark hair." It wasn't much to go on but she was sure they would know him when they saw him.

Valerie was unsure of an approach to the situation as she normally wasn't known for her subtlety. She did recognise the importance of stealth on this mission however.
"I'm open to suggestions on how we tackle this one." She said, probing Omnis.

Omnis nodded, taking another look at the compound as he visualized the information his partner had just told him. Sure enough, now that he knew what he was looking for he spotted the three sentries and a couple doors that could lead underground. He watched how they moved for a few minutes, noting where they went and how regular they were. Once he was sure of what their rotation was, he gave Valerie a smile. "I think I can get us into the complex without them seeing us. We'll have to move quick, and quiet, but I believe in you! We can do this!" He spoke emphatically yet quietly, giving Valerie a thumbs up and a big grin. To some it may seem comical, yet it was something that he did that always seemed to instill confidence in others. He truly did believe in what other people could do and that ironclad conviction tended to rub off on those he came into contact with.

Counting out some seconds in his head, Omnis gently took Valerie's hand before suddenly running forth, keeping low and making sure his partner was right behind him. They got halfway there when they ducked behind a small dune as one of the guards turned their way. He counted to ten, which was when the guard turned to continue his path, and they managed to sneak the rest of the way there. Two short walls and a corner later and they were in the middle of the buildings, inside the ring the guards were making as they kept watch and close to a couple of doors down into the facility itself. For the moment they were safe, able to catch breath and plan their next step. It was no small feat that they had entered the complex without being seen, yet the stealth would be incredibly useful as they continued in. Perhaps they could steal some robes and blend in, or they'd get lucky and find the hostage down one of these close sets of stairs. Omnis had a good feeling about this mission.

Valerie couldn't help but smile at Omnis' overwhelming positivity, it was infectious. Valerie shot back her own pair of raised thumbs before her companion abruptly took her hand and began to move down towards the compound. He could of at least had the nerve to ask before grabbing my hand, she thought in a huff. Nevertheless she followed his lead and the two of them successfully managed to infiltrate the compound with little to no attention garnered. Once inside Valerie swore she could hear the faint chanting of voices from below the stairwell. After quietly descending the stairs and peering around the corner of the doorway, she came upon a sight unlike any she had seen before.

A group of ten robed figures stood in a circle around a table of which the contents could not be seen from Valerie's position. Each of the cultists had their arms extended and would raise and lower them in a sort of kowtow movement, the incomprehensible chanting was loud and filled the room. Immediately Valerie felt a shiver run down her spine, this felt as if it were some kind of horror scene out of some fantasy. Luckily the loud noise of the chanting would drown out any movements made by the two rebels and their focus was clearly distracted by whatever was laid on the table.

Valerie decided to take the lead with this one and slowly crept into the expansive basement level, weaving in and around the hallways that surrounded the... Worship room. She would peek her head into each of the rooms as she passed them by, they all seemed empty for most part besides a bed and in some cases, hastily written scriptures and drawings that covered the walls and tables. They all seemed manic and many had illustrations of weirdly shaped beasts and in every single one a large archway was portrayed in black ink. Eternity's Gate, she guessed, what a silly belief. In one of the final rooms down the hallway Valerie noticed a figure strapped down on a sole bed, simple ropes were used to tie his hands and feet to the posts. Valerie approached the figure slowly and from under the hood of the robe she saw darkly tanned skin, she smiled. The robed figure noticed their arrival and spoke enthusiastically. "Is it time for my next trial?" He spoke. Valerie was perplexed, were they torturing the poor boy? As she reached the bed she raised the goggles from her eyes and smiled,
"Don't worry, your mother sent us to get you out of this mess." She said softly and calmly. The boy's face contorted in disgust as if she had said something abhorrent.

"Get me out? I chose to be here, this is my trial to enter the holy order." He said in anger, his voice beginning to rise. He began to struggle in his bindings and then looked Valerie dead in the eye. "You won't ruin this chance for me!" He shouted, the chanting still continued on. If this kept up, the idiot teenager would blow their cover. Just as he was about to open his mouth to speak again, Valerie swiftly drew her wrench from her belt and whacked it over the teenagers head, knocking him clean out. She then turned to her partner and shrugged, "The mission brief did say relatively unharmed." She whispered.

Omnis checked the wound on the young man's head, pleased to see that it was only enough to knock him out and not give any lasting damage. A kolto patch and some rest and he'd be fine. "You've done this before, haven't you?" He gave Valerie a playful smile before glancing around, making sure they were still alone for the moment. He then looked a bit abashed, scratching the back of his head. "I'm sorry about just grabbing you earlier, by the way. Sometimes I act before I think and we had such close timing to deal with. I'll try to let you know first going forward, if it happens again." He gave her another smile as he finished apologizing, though a sound from down the hall cut off anything else he wanted to say.

Pulling the unconscious young man and Valerie into a nearby room, he held a finger to his mouth for her to keep quiet for now. Knowing they were hidden, he slipped out of the room and started to hunt for some incriminating evidence against the cult, to make sure they were pushed out of this place permanently. Luck was again on Omnis' side, though, as a thick door at the end of the compound's basement led to a spice labe. Part of the Spice was used in some of the religious practices, a datapad near the chemical rack detailing what was to be used and when it was to be used. Whatever else they made, though, they sold through local dealers to help afford not only the complex they lived in but the bribes needed to make people look the other way. They'd just left this other datapad laying around detailing who was being paid off and who the spice was being sold to. This should be exactly what their client was looking for. Taking the datapads, Omnis made his way back to Valerie to show off what he found. Now they just had to get out of here.

Valerie flashed the other rebel a cheeky smile, "More often that I would like to admit," she said softly. It was true, her wrench has had its fair share of cranium whacking activity but in her defense it was better than other potentially lethal options. A simple whack on the head was a fantastic solution to a surprisingly large amount of problems. Omnis went on to apologise for grabbing her hand and she smiled again, "Don't worry about it, no harm done." She never expected the gung-ho rebel to even realise what he had done but it was clear that there was more to the blondie than meets the eye.

Valerie wasn't too thrilled to being left in a room with the unconscious teenager while Omnis went out to find evidence against the cultists. While she waited, she decided it a good idea to give the kid beside her a good look over to see exactly who it was that they were trying to save. She pulled his hood down and underneath the veil of cloth there was a young-faced boy with a head of shaggy black hair. His skin was leathery and browned due to overexposure in the sun and weathering from the sand. His face was gaunt and there were dark purple bags under his eyes. They were unmistakable as she had seen the same symptoms in many others in the less savoury parts of the Galaxy. Spice addiction, she concluded. He looked younger than she had expected. Vee wouldn't think him older than fourteen or fifteen by the soft features of his face. She felt a minute amount of pity as she comprehended the terrible circumstances the boy must have gone through, or perhaps he was just a fool going through some stupid rebellious phase. Who was she to judge though, that's basically her own life story.

Omnis returned promptly with a few datapads that she had assumed held the information they needed,
"Good job Mr Detective." She said sarcastically. "Now it's time to bounce." Valerie jumped to her feet and took the datapads from the rebel and gestured for him to carry the teenager. While she was good at a great many things, heavy lifting was not one of those things. She slid out the door of the sideroom and made her way down the hallways of the basement level past the main worship room and back towards the stairwell to the surface. As she ran she looked over one of the datapads. The information of the spice dealings lined up with what she had witnessed prior and it all made sense to her. These cultists would provide spice and other narcotics to impressionable teens and then recruit them into their ranks. It seemed that the cult was just a cover up scheme after all and whoever was truly in charge of this operation was just taking advantage of all these poor people. Just as they were about to climb the stairwell the teenager hanging precariously from Omnis' shoulder let out a loud moan that permeated the chanting. The chanting died out and was instead replaced with murmuring. Valerie's heart skipped and beat and she signalled that they should quickly get out as quick as possible before any further suspicions arose.

If it was one thing that Omnis had learned, it was that when something changed in one's environment it usually came before bad things started to happen. As the chanting changed to murmurs he knew their stealth was about to be compromised. Trusting in his luck, and the Force, he pushed on forwards up the stairs as he looked for a way for them to get out. They'd only have a matter of time before they were found, now that the cult was actively looking for something wrong in their midst. As he looked up and down the alley between buildings, still no guard in sight yet, he followed his instincts and chose a door that was a bit farther than others, yet just felt right to him. His faith in the Force paid off, as they found themselves in a garage with a couple of speeders powered down.

It looked like one was just finishing with repairs, the bay door open to the outside and the keys in the ignition. Laying the unconscious young man in the back seat, he helped Valerie get in the passenger side while he jumped in the driver's seat. Checking the console, he grinned as he pulled out a pair of sunglasses which he then put on. Revving the engine and getting the speeder to the appropriate lift, he gunned the accelerator to speed out of the complex and back towards actual civilization. Luck was still on their side, as the possible commotion below had drawn the guards from up top down there as well, so no one heard the speeder take off and thus there was no pursuit. As the wind raced through Omnis' hair, light glinting off of his sunglasses, he gave Valerie a smile at a good job done. She'd guide them back to the town and back to their client, where she'd finish up the fine details of the job. No one hurt, evidence found, and not a single cultist knew they had been there. A damn good show, he'd have to remember this to try to make a play out of it. Perhaps his next character idea could be a secret agent of some kind.

Valerie was impressed by Omnis' ability to traverse the compound and by some random stroke of luck the two had stumbled upon an unguarded speeder garage as if it were placed there exactly for them. She was dumbstruck by their own fortune. As the two entered the vehicle she could hear shouts of commotion echoing from underground, there was no doubt that the cultists had discovered the teenagers holding room missing a certain individual. Omnis promptly started up the ignition and within moments they were speeding out of the compound without a single hitch in the ride. Valerie sat back in her seat and sighed in relief, that was actually surprisingly simple and went about as smoothly as one could ask for. She looked back at the unconscious teenager and then back at her partner, "Not half bad." She admitted with a sense of pride in her voice, ignoring the fact that she had probably given their rescue target a concussion.

The journey back to the spaceport settlement was unremarkable with nothing but a plume of sand flying into the air behind them as they went. The wind created from the high speed of the vehicle coupled with the drastically lowering temperatures of the planet left Valerie frozen. She couldn't wait to find a hot bath somewhere and wash out the grains of sand that had invaded every fibre of her being. Thankfully it didn't take too long to reach their destination and Valerie guided Omnis to the location of the boy's mother. She could be seen standing outside of her estate, her arms crossed and worry written all over her face.

As soon as Omnis stopped the speeder, Valerie exited the vehicle and pulled the teenager out from the back seat. At first the mother let out a gasp in horror, thinking that they had only brought back the lifeless corpse of her boy but as she approached she realised that he was in fact breathing.
"What happened to him?" She said with a demanding tone in her voice. She grabbed hold of him and held him with outstretched arms. "Uuuh, he didn't exactly comply with the rescue attempt and then somehow managed to knock his head." Vee replied innocently. The mother caught on quickly and gave her son a dissapointed look. "I had always known that he was getting in with the wrong crowd but I never suspected that it would be this bad." She said somberly. "To think that we would willing join that crazy group of cultists." She shook her head in denial. "Well... About that." Valerie paused,"Those cultists aren't exactly what they say they are." She handed the woman the datapads that they had retrieved from the compound. "It's just a front and whoever is in charge there has made a habit of luring in younger people to perform illegal spice trades under the guise of a religious cult." The mother gave the datapads a quick look over and her expression lightened in relief. "Thank you so much for all of this." She said with a faint smile, "It seems like this 'Father Moi' will get what he deserves." She then turned to her son, "And this boy will learn a lesson or two about discipline." Valerie shivered. The sound of those last words were enough to strike fear into even the most hardened criminal.

Valerie turned to Omnis and gestured that they should get going now, she was sure that the Alliance would sort out the logistics of the reward and she was not excited to watch the poor boy get tortured.
