Tatooine, Great Mersra Plateau, Bo’marr Castle

    Theme
It seemed another typical morning on Tatooine. At Bo’marr castle a pirate gang infamous known as the Blood Tridents were only stirring just as the twin suns began to rise above the sky. Little did they realize what was coming. With their backs to the suns in the sky twenty SP2 Stardancer starfighters flew in escort formation. Inside the ring of protection were twelve Q-1 Praetor dropships and four freighters all descending toward the castle from the north.

Inside the central dropship Commander Hugo Ion sitting down in a seat inspected his blaster rifle before glancing toward the eleven other armed rebels onboard. Some were veterans who outwardly calm waited for the coming firefight. Others, mostly the fresh recruits were more obvious about their nervousness, bodies shaking in their hands or legs as the wind blew against the hull outside. Waiting is always the worst. The Durosian thought with sympathy but did not show it in his neutral expression.

The last thing he wanted to give an impression of pitying them. Such treatment won’t help morale at all. At the same time Ion knew they needed to be inspired, especially the greenhorns.

    “Four minutes to contact!”

The lead pilot up top called back to her passengers in a noticeable Corellian accent. Nodding Hugo stood and replied.

“Put me on speaker.” Once his order was complied, the speaker activated for the whole unit flying to listen in. Ready Hugo turned toward the squad he spoke through a commlink so that everyone in the strike force, from the flyers to the grunts they heard his voice

“Task Force Mynock soon we will engage in combat. I won’t lie this is going to be rough but it is necessary and let me explain.”

He paused briefly to gather himself.

“Every journey begins with a single step. For our Alliance this planet is the first move. While these Blood Tridents are not the Empire but they too oppress and terrorize people through their hideous crimes. Moreover they stand in our way and must be cast down, so we can press onward toward our ultimate objective, the galaxy’s liberation from the Sith. I have every confidence in your devotion to duty and skill in battle and we will accept nothing less than absolute victory!

Good fortune be with you all.”

Finished, Ion sat as the squad now inspired nod among themselves, becoming more determined than ever. They were going need it...

Evelyn exhaled a long, shuddering breath as the Commander finished his speech. She appreciated its simplicity, showing his faith in his soldiers. At one point the shuttle hit a bit of turbulence, causing it to shake a little bit on it's approach. The woman tilted her head back a little bit, letting herself have another long exhale. She tightened her helmet just a little bit, made sure her armor was secure, checked then double checked her weapon.

Evelyn went over in her head the tips given to her by the more experienced soldiers. Move forward, find cover, don't take unnecessary risks. Her grip tightened on the barrel of her rifle, her knuckles going white as she thought of what was about to happen.

Yet as she mulled the commanders words and the transport rocketed towards its destination, Evelyn began to realize something. It wasn't trepidation or nervousness that was making her heart hammer and her legs shake. It was excitement. The thought that knowing she was about to rush headlong into battle, maybe get shot, and maybe die, and didn't feel any nervousness? It was worrying, but the woman let herself ride the high of this experience.

She looked up at the Commander, somewhat fascinated by the alien. She'd never met him before, although she wouldn't really call this a meeting either, and only had seen him through memos sent out to the Alliance. For some reason she thought the famed commander of the Alliance would be... well human.

But Evelyn Fest wasn't a xenophobe and she wasn't going to be now. There's a reason the Duros was named Commander. A reason that the older members of the Alliance placed their trust in him to see things through. Deep inside she might not have the same loyalty to the cause, the same willingness to die, as everyone else. But she trusted skill and the Alliance Commander made it plain that he had plenty of that.

With one more long exhale of breath, Evelyn leaned back into her seat. She was ready.

Jake sat in the cockpit of his stardancer as they streaked towards the rebel base. There approach was fast as the small task force wanted to get low as soon as they could. Sun behind them would only blind a pirate looking with his naked eye and they had no way of knowing what senors or defenses the pirates had. Only issue was that the fights where forced to fly slow most where only at 70% power since the freighters and drop ships could not hope to match there speed. Still all was while.

"Four min till they land" the soft female voice of a Alderaan pilot came through. The Galactic Alliance attract all sorts and his flight lead it seems was from a rather while off planet. One wondered why she felt the need to fight back. Not that Jake complained.

"blue 12 copies" as his voice joined the rest of the pilots.

The ships where still all most at full speed though now skimming the ground. The pirates seemed to start to react but it was to late. Jake joined the fighters as the broke of from in front of the transports in a starburst formation. As the transports flared up so that wind resistances would aid there now screaming repulsors trying to slow down as fast as they could so they could land. Jake felt sorry for the passengers but hey better land fast than get shot down.

Hugo Ion held on tight to his seat with the dropship shaking more violently the closer they neared the enemy stronghold. Fortunately for the strike force the Blood Tridents had been mainly sleeping off a hard night of drinking and partying to a celeberate a recent raid. So there wasn’t exactly anyone manning their sensors when the attack happened. Rebel fighters broke off from the transports at the last leg of the approach. Already the invading starfighters let loose with their cannons as they dive as aerial predators at specific targets of interests throughout the castle.

Several explosions rocked the foundation. Brigands now who had now slumbered now woke to sheer panic as hell unleashed on them. Many ran for shelter out of the main court yard, others were strafed by rebel starcraft. So there wasn’t an organized defense when the dropship and additional freighters finally slow their apporch. Back in his transport Commander Ion and many rebel troops inside were nearly lucrch from their seats.

Stomach suddenly queasy the Duros thought with a grimance. Should’ve skipped breakfast. He pushed down such silent complaint when the ship landed on the ground. Subsequently the doors opened, and Hugo jumped up with blaster in hand and shouted.

    “FORWARD!”

With that one word he charge out into the courtyard soon joined quickly by more rebels.

Move forward, find cover, no heroics. Her mantra repeated in her head as she charged out of the transport. Her rifle held tight against her chest, Evelyn found an overturned crate, spilling its contents all over the ground. She practically threw herself against it, smashing her back against it. The girls heart was hammering as blaster fire rang out around her. She poked her head around her cover just in time to see a fighter strafe an area.

An unlucky pirate was blown away by the blast, the explosion blowing a limb off as it wasn't near enough to have just vaporized him. He went sprawling backwards, landing on his back and clutching the stump of his leg. Evelyn's eyes were wide as she took in the sight of the man screaming desperately for help. A shot flew toward him, burying itself in his chest and ending his suffering.

    Evelyn's
focus broke as something told her to duck her head back behind cover. As she did so, a split second later a bolt blew past, singing her hair and scorching the hull of the transport ship she just disembarked. Time seemed to slow down as adrenaline, or maybe something else, powered her. She saw a pirate sprinting across the main courtyard, attempting to join a group of his comrades behind a circle of debris where they were attempting to regroup.

She aimed around the corner again and fired four shots, each trying to hit the pirate. However they did nothing but succeed in tripping him. At the last moment he managed to dive behind cover with his allies. Evelyn frowned, dissapointed in herself but determined to do better. She was the best sport shooter in her town damnit, she can hit a few crusty pirates.

Breaking off in his fighter he turned his head before bring the craft in line with his eyes. The base looked deserted. A life time of easy living, never being threatened had made the pirates lax with security. This was the first time in a long time that there fortress was being tested as a fortress.

Firing his light laser canons at a pre-planned target Jake watched the bolts slam in to a guard tower, a empty guard tower. Still the display of firepower from his and the other ships bolstered the moral of rebel ground forces.

But all things could not last. Pirates started to stream from everywhere. The ground below erupting in a light show as bolts flew across the brown back drop that was Tatooine. Still the sudden attack by Galactic Aliance forces had allowed them to get with in the pirates defensive line. Still it would be a fight and Jake readied him self and his craft for now the battle had truly begun.

Seeing a large group of pirates move to fill a trench Jake moved the out the battle field before swinging back in, flying low he kicked dust up behind him as hi aimed and fired. The entire trench network was open to him as bolts slammed in to the trench sending bodies flying. Breaking away from the attack run he flew friendly infantry that rushed in to take and use the defensive line against it's old owners. So Far the battle was going good

Hell unleashed, that was the description for what’s happening. Laser bolts flashed all over and stone shattered by explosions ignited in a chorus of thunderous roars. Alliance starcraft swarm above and around the castle, that one could almost mistaken them a pack of mynocks. His heart racing Commander Hugo with seven rebels behind him raced to find the nearest cover as shots flew past them.

We need to get out of the kriffing open! The Duros leader thought, gritting his teeth as he raced for out of harms way. It was in that next moment he spotted a rebel fighter strafing an entire trench line, slaughtering it’s occupants with ease.

Firing two bolts into a pirate’s back who panicked and ran out in the open Hugo rushed for the trench, followed the team with him. They jumped inside the defenses, taking for their own. “We hold here for now as a rallying point.” Ion shouted to the group through the deafening sounds. Maninig a post the red eyed alien fired three bolts toward seven pirates down a staircase, missing with the first two shots but woundied one hostile in the left leg.

This caused the brigand to fall down the steps.

Enemy blasterfire forced the commander to duck down. “They’re getting their shit together.” He muttered in frustration. It was true, the utter shock of the sudden invasion now organized into a stubborn defense by the Blood Tridents. Seconds later in the center of the keep, a dozen RX/5 starfighters poured out from a makeshift hanger it’s doors opened counter-attacking against alliance starcraft.

Evelyn saw the Duros run for a trench the pirates had dug beforehand. Her crate was getting beat down into a bent, scorched pile of metal. No way was it going to last long, yet the fire wouldn't let up. She poked around the corner of her crate to fire a couple of rounds at the group of pirates firing at her, none of them hitting yet it forced them to duck down into cover for a second.

She took the opportunity to jump up and suddenly sprint forward. As she did so, enemy starfighters began shooting out of the hangar like a bullet from a slugthrower. She slowed down a little bit as they flew overhead, jostling her in her desperate sprint. She stumbled forward a little bit, slowing her just enough for a few pirates to see her and start opening fire.

She would've taken two bolts in the chest if not for her practically throwing herself backward at the last moment, instinctively knowing which bolts to be careful for. Two more hit the sand near her feet and Evelyn began scrabbling forward, anywhere, to find someplace she could be safe from the barrage.

In front of her was the burning wreck of a landspeeder tilted on its side, taken out in the first strafing run by the friendly starfighters. Evelyn got up and sprinted madly for it, shooting to her side in the direction of the pirates trying to take her out. At the last moment she jumped forward behind the landspeeder to see a trio of bolts zoom through the air where she was a moment ago. Then a second later, a barrage of enemy bolts started banging into the broken landspeeder actually succeeding in moving it a little.

Evelyn pressed her back against the landspeeder, rifle to her chest as she started to get a little panicky, the noise and chaos of the fight starting to get to her. She glanced around her cover at the trench to see how far she got. She mainly ran across the battlefield rather than down it and only ended up slightly closer to the battle line. She sank to the ground, taking several deep breaths in an effort to control herself.

Jake started to turn his fighter to unload another barge on to the pirated who had finally gotten there act together. But a bit to late since friendly galactic alliance ground force that Jake even from the air could see where being lead by the commander of the Alliance him self had entered the first trench line. Though there where still forces in the open pushing from what little cover they had to the next bit of cover at least ground was taken that could be held.

Firing on the pirates as they moved in to launch a counter attack Jake saw it. Like angry insect pouring out there hive the Pirate Fighters launched. They turned sharply after getting in to the. Some going after Alliance air craft others ground forces as they attempted to regain the trench. It was a bold move since the freighters, transports and fighters of the alliance out numbered the pirates. A message came through the radio As Jake pulled out of a dive "This is blue leader focus on the enemy enemy fights Yellow and Green will focus on ground support. Jake acknowledged the order with a simple "Roger" Before selecting a target.

flying High jake dove back down in to the swirling mess of fighters and transports with the sun behind him. His target was blinded to the approach of Jake and never saw it coming. His death was fast as Jake only fired a few meters out as the laser canons sent bolts of light in to the cockpit of the Pirate RX/5. The ship burst in to flames before to front blew up as the tail crashed in to the ground. The wings seemed to flutter for a brief second before smashing into to the ground as derby rained on to the sand below .

Pulling out of the dive Jake skimmed the sand and that when it happened. As Jake pulled up A pirate fired. Jake saw the missile and dived back down to the ground as it exploded just behind him. The shock wave and shrapnel ripping in to the back of the star dancer as Jake now trailed black smoke behind his craft as he once again pulled up to rejoin the dogfight.

Red shots exchanged repeatedly from all sides through the now battle scarred courtyard. Commander Hugo looked up, briefly watching the dogfight ensuing over the air. The Durosian subsequently shifted his gaze toward the rebel squad in the trench with him. One, a Gotal rifleman on the left hand side cried out, falling back with a new burning hole in the forehead. Gripping his rifle Ion pushed himself up and aimed, firing five bolts at a trio of pirates sheltering behind a column of pillars adjacent to the north wall. He missed but forced the enemies back.

Out of the corner of his red eyes Hugo noted a number of rebels ranging from single individuals to squads were pinned down by fierce opposition. We can’t stay like this. Or else casualties are gonna to mount soon. Subsequently he picked up the chatter from their aerial force through the comms. With a sly grin forming the commander called in, as he stood his head and said through the commlink.

“Flight green and yellow this is Mynock leader I will have some targets for you all soon by green flare.”

Signaling for the squad with him to provide covering fire at their front Hugo pulled out a canister with one hand. The resistance fighters in the trench obliged, letting loose with a murderous volley on hostiles of the opposite end yards away. Once the chance peresrnted itself Ion activated the canister and hurled it toward a mass of pirates around a ring of crates and overturned tables at the main entrance to the inner keep.

A green plume of smoke burst forth providing the supporting fighters with a clear objective. They dive in two wave successive waves raining death and explosive destruction upon the unfortunate raiders, wiping many of them out. Seeing their comrades torn to pieces, the remaining defenders on the ground flee into the interior. Watching the ‘fireworks’ Hugo called in.

“Thanks for the assist flyboys. Alright ground units move inside and spread out. Remember cornered womp rats will savegly. So be prepare for anything!”

With the new orders the most rebels still living in the courtyard proceed to carry it out Hugo Ion getting up from the trench, noticing Evelyn Fest behind the crashed landspeeder on the verge of panic. While sympathetic the commander required everyone able for this fight. He ran over to her and said in a father-like manner offering his right hand.

    “Cmon rebel let’s go.”

Evelyn looked up from her spot to see the Duros offering her a hand. She took it and hauled herself up. The woman looked worn out and nervous yet those worries lessened as she saw the pirates retreating deeper into the fortress. She just quietly muttered, "We're winning."

Evelyn looked back the the commander and remembered who she was talking to. Her hand almost snapped up in a salute, but she realized this was a combat situation and training told her to never let the enemy know who's in charge. She looked to the Duros and then, "Thank you, erm sir. I apologize for not contributing more. This... isn't what I thought it'd be."

Jake pulled up his crafting trailing smoke as he looked for his next target when he saw it. A pirate fighter and just strafed one of the alliance freighters causing burst of black smoke to erupt from the engine. The freighter the "monkeys fist struggled to regain altitude and only stopped slamming in to the ground below with less than a meter to spare but Jake did not see this. He had a new target. Pushing his stardancer to the limit Jake ignored the alarms about damage, it was only his hyperdrive and not like he needed it right now though the fuel leak was was bad it was pointless to worry about. The leak was so bad he could not make it to any friendly base no mater when he left.

Pushing in behind the pirate Jake opened up with his laser canons but the enemy pilot was good really good. The pirate rolled and pulled up in a inverted climb as Jake pulled up to to get a shot the pirate cut his engines and dropped as Jake rushed past. With only seconds to spare Jake pulled all the way back in to a inverted roll as bolts flew over the top of the under side of the stardancer as Jake went and completed the roll leveling out just meters above the sandy bellow Jake pulled up with smoke and sand blasting behind him as he raced towards his Target who had raced towards him a star fighter joust, with out a doubt the dumbest thing two pilots could ever do and here one was happening. As the two craft fired rolled out of the incoming fire matching each other the entire time before both fighters broke off. Jake blasting past his target as it happened. The alarm was louder than the others, not because it was louder but because of the silence. The star dancer engines spluttered and gave a cough before dying. The fuel low alarm beeping as the ship started to fall to the ground. While guess he was about to join those on the ground soon "This is Blue 12, i am going down say again i am going down"

“There still time to prove yourself because I seriously doubt this fight is over. Stay close and watch your shots.” As much as Hugo was the overall leader of the alliance, he preferred to form and maintain connections with its members when possible. They needed to see he cared enough but also be reminded of the responsibilities of their collective cause.

Gesturing for Evelyn to follow, the Duros spotted a rebel fighter crash for the ground nearby. Grimacing in silence he forced himself to start running toward the main steps. More than a hundred resistance fighters spilt into squads started to make their push into the castle’s inner quartehers from different entries. Hugo had them link to the comms to better coordinate them.

Leading several squads on the front entrance they enter the first room with cautious steps and weapons at the ready. The air was stench with cheap drinks, smoke and odors that people would rather not mention. Unlike humans, Hugo’s species did had noses but smell through the eyes instead. He sighed, and thought. Pirates are not known for cleanliness.

Just as the rebel main group came what seemed to be a banquet hall, pirates swiftly appeared from the balcony on the opposite end firing blaster bolts and shouting curses at their now hated intruders. Hugo jumped and rolled toward an overturned large table, using it as cover. Chest pounding Ion leaned up and fired a three round burst but was forced back down by the enemy who nearly shot in the face by a few inches.

Back in shelter Hugo shook his head, hoping this castle will be worth this fight.

Evelyn ducked behind a table next to the group of Rebels, trying to find some way of figuring out the situation they were in. From their left came a pirate, coming down steps with a rifle in his hand. Evelyn quickly aimed her blaster at him and pumped two shots into his chest, dropping the pirate and making him tumble the rest of the way.

She realized however, the pirate was one of the shooters from the balcony. The stairs must lead up to the balcony or at least similar. In any case it was better than sitting down here where the pirates had the height advantage and could keep wearing them down. Evelyn shouted out, "Sir!" then pointed at the path leading upstairs.

The plan, left unsaid so the pirates wouldn't know what she was up to, was obvious. She needed covering fire and she could cross the banquet hall to get to the stairs. At least there she'd be on even ground and be able to distract the rest of the shooters on the balcony.

Jake tried to level level the now falling fighter, his repulosor straining as the craft silently through the skies towards the old castle. Towards the castle Jake realized the very hard castle with walls. Trying to slow down Jake realized it was no use, till he spotted the door way on the upper level. It led out to the battlements and was wide enough if just so. Aiming for door pirates on the battlements ran for cover with last just jump out of the way.

Impact was softer than expected but that only meant the fighter maintained forward momentum as it skidded through a hallway. The sides of the fighter and cannons ripped off and sparks shot everywhere. It was fortunate the fighter had no fuel to catch fire on the sparks as the fighter raced along. The repulosor'long since gone, then it happened.

The stardancer came out on to some balcony. 4 pirates before him so focused on shooting alliance forces only turned there heads to late. The snub fighter hit them and smashed through a railing that gave the fighter a slight jump. The 4 pirates fell a very survivable fall but the impact and smashing thorough the railing told all who saw them fall that those 4 where dead, very dead.

The remains of the fighter with Jake still strapped in dropped on to the stairs bellow him crushing one unlucky pirate as the fighter began to roll down the stairs with pirates who had garrisoned them selfs on the stairs behind the large stone railings running away even though it to them in to the open. When the fighter finally came to a stop some how the right way up Jake was staring out of his cockpit at the attack alliance ground forces. Some how he was alive, uninjured but just very confused. As Jake activated the emergency canopy release the now version cracked transparasteel glass flew up as Jake unbundled his 8 point flight harness. At that point the Pirates in the open and the alliance forces realized the same thing but the alliance forces acted before the pirates could come up with a plan as blaster bolts resumed fire, now with Jake far closer than he planed to be at the start of the attack.

Seeing what Evelyn was indirectly referring to, the Commander realized what he needed to do. He aimed for the balcony to provide the rebel woman a diversion for her to advance up the steps. Before he could however, one of their fighters without warning brust forth from behind the balcony, crashing into it. Hugo with widened hit the ground for shelter from the debris that followed.

    “What the kriffing hell!”

He exclaimed in utter shock. As soon as that happen it was all over with deafening silence. Looking up the Duros and his Rebels found themselves staring at the pilot inside the cockpit. In that moment Hugo didn’t whether to hug or punch the flyer for what just happened.

    Maybe both.

Subsequently, the rebels and surviving pirates who were killed by the crash earlier opened up again. Two of the former, a zabark and an olive skinned human behind Hugo died but three more of their comrades were wounded, shot in the legs or sides. Even the invaders now held the advantage in firepower and numbers, wiping out the group of space raiders in the process.

Momentarily distracted, Evelyn just watched in stunned silence as the fighter crashed through the wall of the monastery, colliding with the balcony. She gaped in awe at the fighter as it came to a stop, then saw the canopy pop off. Seizing her moment, Evelyn quickly dashed across the hall over to the steps. No one was watching her advance as the rest of the rebel forces fired on the pirates.

Evelyn rested against the wall, took a few deep breaths, then quickly looked around the corner of the wall and began to open fire. She had barely taken a moment to aim before she started to open fire. There were three pirates opening up on the Rebels below them.

Although she hadn't exactly aimed, or planned out where she was going to fire, Evelyn fired two bolts towards each pirate. One was hit in their left leg and arm, another in the stomach as the second bolt passed overhead, and the third was hit in the head. However a helmet the man was wearing absorbed most of the force, leaving the pirate unconscious and probably concussed.

Evelyn kept her rifle trained on the three raiders she had just downed, panting in exhilaration. She then shouted over the din of the faltering blaster fire, "Clear up here! Three wounded!"

Evelyn had a shit eating grin on her face. She got off to a rough start at first, mainly just getting shot at. But she was proud of herself for bucking up as things progressed.

Jake climbed out of the fighter and drew his pistol as he watched a female Alliance solder run up the stairs. Deciding that there was no point in doing nothing he ran up with her. The fighting here was dying down but the pirates were falling back not running away. Jake knew the difference was clear, in the latter they still had fight left in them. Covering the stairs Jake fired after the pirates as they fell back but was only able to wing one of them on the side.

It was then that Jake spotted the commander, the highest ranking Alliance was here. It dawned on Jake that he had just seen his crash to. giving a wave and smile jake Pointed to the snub fighter "Sorry about the ship sir, I am sure it will buff out though."

Just like that the firefight was over. Finally Hugo breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Still they took some losses and he glanced to the bodies and the wounded now being treated by the medics. The Duros had understand by now in war people can suffer or die but that didn’t make it any easier for his heart to bear. Just then he received a message that was boardcast to all alliance members with commlimsk in the area.

“Commander the castle have been cleared. We had enemy resistance in several sectors but they have been eliminated and so are their fighters.”

“Acknowledged Deme keep me posted over and out.” Hugo replied in a professional tone. Turning toward the rebels all around him, including Evelyn and Jake the leader nodded with eyes filled with pride.

“Well done everyone. You have accomplished much today. Our alliance owns you all a debt we can’t truly repay.”

Done, Hugo Ion turned his mind to business of how to set up their futre base here. One step indeed.

Evelyn sighed a breath of relief as she took a seat on a crate outside. Already people were moving the corpses out of the base and clearing out rubble. However the first wave that attacked the monastery was granted a reprieve due to the results in the assault. Evelyn grinned as she looked around. They had secured a base for the Galactic Alliance, the first step of hopefully many for the Alliance.

Evelyn felt a frown forming on her face at the pride she felt from this victory. She wasn't a true rebel, all gung-ho and for the cause, yet she was just as happy as anyone else about the outcome of the mission. Probably just excited she didn't die today. Still, she didn't let her need to be a cynic get her down. She earned this victory, same as everyone else and was going to enjoy it damnit.

Evelyn set her rifle next to her, letting out one more sigh of relief. However something was nagging at the back of her mind. She got lucky a few times there. Really lucky. By all rights she should've been a corpse with a few fresh blaster marks where she didn't have them before. Yet she always moved in just the right way, knew which direction to go. Whatever was helping her manifested the most when she had practically blind-fired at the last group of pirates and managed to mostly score hits.

    Whatever, just luck right?
