OOC: This is a training thread and death is disabled but serious injury is still possible. Broken bones and other risks are still present considering that characters will be fighting one another for practice purposes. You will certainly gain scars if you are not careful.

One had already flunked out. He could not blame the gal. She just had not the stomach for it. It was best she had stopped where she had and went home without getting too badly hurt.

Koil had picked this night for this exercise on purpose. Only one of the three moons of concord Dawn was visible tonight. Combined with the partial cloud cover it was going to be a dark night. This night the trainies, twenty seven of them would meet him on a remote beach of Jartra Lake. The waters were moving enough to be seen as ocean waves and were not too bad on their own. But combined with the darkness it was still dangerous.

Life preservers were stacked on one side with reflective tape and emergency blinkers just in case. He had come out early and hammered a post into the ground. Attached to it was a bell. It was up on a dune where the beach ended and the grassy hill beyond met. Tonight they would get a taste of what he had dealt with over his life. In his hand he held a canister and twirled it patiently, a flashlight in the other. The only other light was that atop the bell pole and the dark moon light.

Drace had arrived early. He saw no other shapes in the darkness besides Koil, so he assumed no one else had arrived yet, and made his way over to the Al'verde. The Marauder could barely see anything, and couldn't help but wonder what new method of torture Koil had invented and would subject them to. This time, Drace had brought his armor stacked up in a bag, predicting that they would not need it at the beach. Should they need it, he was ready to take it out and equip it.

His boots stepped through the sand, his steps heavy and deliberate to prevent slipping or getting sand in his shoes, though he likely would soon enough. Drace threw the bag with his armor down a few meters away once he stopped by Koil, and turned to him. "So, what are we doing today?" he asked, waiting for people to arrive.

Dax arrived just behind his friend Drace. The Solus was looking toward Koil and completely missed that Dax was only about ten meters behind. No matter. He followed Drace to the Al'verde, Koil seemed to be a master at setting the mood and poorly instruct his participants as what the kark they were doing here.

Dax stacked his armor on the sand just a couple of meters away and he lined up with Drace. "I don't see any knives, so bonus" commented. "what ever it is, I didn't drink enough to enjoy it."

A cold wind blew, disturbing the sands and forming new mounds. A dim light shined down, only one of the triplet moons visible tonight. It was dark, oppressively so, and there were no sounds but the gentle washing of the ocean upon the shore. Leandros marched down the beach, armor tightly bound in a bundle with his weapons, just in case. His retinue followed suit, battered and bruised from their previous fights. Some had won and some had lost, but all had survived and made it onto the next phase. He was proud of them, but was not surprised. He was a stern, dour man who exposed them to various hardships and drilled them routinely, shaping them into lethal weapons.

Tonight, they were to be tested again in Koil’s ongoing crucible. He was not certain what this challenge would entail, but he was prepared for it. His confidence was backed by consummate skill and the knowledge that the gods channeled their wills through him. He had many things to fight for, to survive for, so whatever trials and tribulations Koil threw his way, he would complete.

Leandros approached and set his gear aside, his warriors following suit. They gathered off to the side while he stood near Koil and regarded the man. Their group had lost one, the girl who believed fury was a boy’s plaything. There was a certain irony to that which he had to chuckle at internally. He folded his arms across his chest and tilted his head to crack his neck, inhaling deeply. He was curious to see what was in store for them this time.

The crunch and shift of the sand came and went as the warriors arrived but the lapping of the waves and the breeze that russeled the grass on the other side of the hill. He watched with his eyes behind his already dark helmet to everyone around. Turning from the assembled group he would head over to the post with the bell on it. He stood by it for a moment, turning and looking back at everyone around. Many of them, were just half silouhettes. "You see this? This..." He grabbed the rope attached and yanked it, letting a loud clang ring through the otherwise quiet night. He did it again and once more. "...is your ticket home. You ring that bell three times you get a nice dry towel, you get a hot meal, and you get a bed to sleep in. All you have to do is ring this bell."

Koil started walking back to the group and leave the bell behind him. "...but know that if you ring that bell you are giving up on this excersize. You are saying that you do not have what it takes to continue. So before I make you feel like you have become Hod Ha'ran's plaything go right ahead and ring that bell. Otherwise, put your osik down and grab a life preserver and make a line."

Dax stood, watching the Field Marshal show a presentation. He had a talent for the dramatic, like a mandalorian opera singer. But was also a walking killing machine and a trusted member of Manda'lor's council. So Dax took a deep breath in through his nose and exhaled slowly. Then reaching for the preserver and stood first in line.

"You're going to have to try a little harder to send me home."

Drace watched Koil as he spoke of a warm meal and a bed to sleep in, and it was obvious there would be a catch. The Marshal wasn't a pansy; he would not offer something like that without there being some "consequences," and he quickly laid down the ultimatum. There it is. Drace shifted, feeling his boots sinking down into the sand. The Mandalorian looked around at the others, feeling no temptation but wondering if anyone would bow out. He grabbed a life preserver and got into line beside Dax.

"You wouldn't gotten to walk away either way," Drace murmured to Dax. "You'd have had to crawl away. You don't get to be a hut'uun, not on my watch."

Leandros stood there, arms across his chest, and watched Koil offer them a chance to quit. The bell tolled, sending out a dull, bleak ding that drowned out the noise of the waves for a moment. It was a sad, haunting noise, a symbol of a lack of intestinal fortitude; a symbol of quitting early when the going got tough. Mandalorians did not do that. He panned his gaze over his warriors, each of them in turn looking at each other to see if any of them would opt out. He knew they would not, and they knew they would not, for the collective pressure of their leader and their peers would make them remain at the very least.

Leandros walked over and grabbed a preserver and took his place in line, his retinue following suit behind him. They shifted around, the cool sand massing around their feet as they applied pressure to different parts of their feet. ”Nobody is ringing that bell,” he asserted sternly, breaking the silence of the night. He was ready to get this show on the road.

Seeing everybody get in line he signalled for his three Personal Entertainment Attendants to turn on their lights. Normally they were used for disco or strobe lights for light shows but they were going to be simple white light glow globes. Grabbing a canister from his belt pouch he shook it a little before walking up to the first of his own warriors and raised it. He depressed the activation stud and held it down as he walked down the line. He did not spray the substance into anybody's eyes. Instead he sprayed it on their foreheads. Most of them were dry for the time being but once they started to sweat, once they got wet from the water it would drip into their eyes and the pepper spray would burn. It was just one degree of the training.

Next he pulled out a flare gun and fired it so the shot would land some twenty meters further down the beach. The PEAs would make sure they did not fall though with the pepper spray it was about to still be quite hard for them to see. "All of you will run down to that flare and do five burpies and come back here." He said "Move!" He barked. He expected them to get moving. While they made their first dash down he would go over to the hover truck he had brought and started it up. There was a connected water pump that would run off the vehicle's engine. Unraveling the hose that led down into the water he would bring it back up onto the beach, test it and then drop it in the sand for later.

It was a damn good thing he hadn't come wearing his armor. Drace kept his eyes open as Koil sprayed the pepper spray directly onto his forehead, looking straight ahead. When the Field Marshal stopped talking, he broke into a sprint, charging down the beach to the flare. It took him a few seconds to get there, though the burpies were the hard part. Sweat began glistening on his forehead after the first three, and by the fifth, the pepper spray had slowly begun to drip down into his eyes. The supercommando growled quietly, grinding his teeth together. It stung like hell, but he kept his eyes open.

He ran back faster than before, fueled by the pain from the spray in his eyes. Drace was the first to finish, and he stood up straight and waited to see what their next exercise may be.

Dax had to fight the urge to punch Koil in the face. It was instinctive to fight back, he knew what was to come. He bolted as soon as the Field Marshal said move. He just a few steps behind Drace, not a surprise. Running to the edge of the flair. Then pushed out the burpies, again keeping pace with Drace.

His eyes started to burn as he spray and sweat in the inner and outer edges. His tears felt like glass shards on his eye lids. Drace would kick it up a notch but Dax would hold back and embrace the suck. This was only the beginning and the Rau marauder had the keen assumption that Koil was something of a long winded opera fan. As it were though, he finished only about ten or twenty seconds behind the Solus warrior.

Leandros stood stock still while Koil walked down the line. When he reached him, Leandros stared ahead blankly, allowing his peer to spritz the pepper spray onto his forehead. Inhaling deeply, unflinching, he awaited the next command. The liquid on his forehead coalesced and sat there on his skin, not yet beginning to feel the effects of gravity and moving downwards, but it was only a matter of time. He hemmed, but otherwise made no response to the prickling sensation that started to affect his skin. He was a veteran warrior, unphased by the grotesque horrors of battle; a simple spray of pacifier would not reduce him to a bumbling baby.

His eyes traced the flare all the way to its impact point some twenty meters down, the fireball illuminating the formerly-dark sand around it. At Koil’s command, he paused for a moment before setting off in a sprint, taking great strides. In a matter of a few seconds he arrived at the checkpoint and dropped down into his first burpee, kicking sand up where his feet landed. One, two, three four, five; he completed each of his burpees, the cool night air preventing him from breaking a sweat right away. On the final one, he bolted back up and ran towards the line. As he approached, he slowed to a trot, then a swift walk, stretching his neck out while coming to a stop. The motion of running, dropping, and running jostled the liquid on his skin around, beginning its descent towards his eyes at a crawl.

Leandros noted the hose on the ground, then turned his attention back towards Koil. If this was his idea of hardship, then this would be a laughable test.

Koil watched the men run down. Drace came back in the lead but Koil stood there with his arms cross. When Drace stopped he did not speak calmly. He yelled. "Did I say stop! Get your sorry flab ass back down there and don't stop until I say otherwise!" he saw Dax had done the same. "You must but be deaf and dumb as you are ugly."

By now hopefully Leandros had picked up that he should not have stopped either and would get moving again. "Come on little badger..." He said mockingly. "...you're bringing up the end of the group cuz of those short legs...or maybe your just getting old."

He would wait for them to start working on their second round of burpies as he walked along the ridge of the beach dragging the hoze behind him. He would flash a flashlight at some of them so they knew he was talking to them and begin spraying the water up in the air, simulating rain and making the sand wet. "You are here to push yourselves to your limit and go past it. You give up here you can't be depended on out in the field."

He would keep this going for awhile until people were barely running anymore, devolving into a fast walk. "alright, once more and then crawl back to me. Hustle!" He shouted the last bit and waited back where he had initially addressed them. They would definitely be sweating now, the spray from earlier getting in their eyes, being breathed in and making it hard to breath on top of the exertion. The sand would be turned into a clay like mud and covering their clothes, making them heavy and cold. "Grab a fellow warrior by the arm and lay down on the beach on your back, heads towards the water" he pointed. He would have twenty seven warriors locked arms with their faces close enough to the tide to have the water splash over it. He did not need to water board them. Jartra Lake would do it for him. "I'm going to introduce you to something called not breathing."

He didn't even completely stop when Koil started yelling at him. Drace turned on his heel, running back the way he came, a sly smile on his face hidden by the darkness. Koil had probably meant to be encouraging in a drill seargeant sort of way, but it was a little funny seeing him yelling like that; Koil who was normally cool and collected, hurling insults at everyone there. He heard the man yell at Leandros as he got to the burpees again and ground his teeth to avoid chuckling. The Mandalorian did five burpees and kept running, his face serious now. The spray was damn near blinding him, and it was clear from his slower pace. He didn't want to run into someone.

Running back and forth, doing burpees at the end of every lap, Drace got into a routine, although his running considerably slowed. His burpees became sluggish, his muscles starting to protest. Sand covered him, and some had somehow reached his face, getting into his eyes and mingling with the pepper spray. It was a nasty feeling, as if someone had set his eyeballs on fire and then covered them in salt. Tears flowed reflexively, though his face remained as serious as before, not showing the pain he was in. Soon as Koil commanded, he stopped, laid down on his stomach, and crawled through the sand. Covered completely by now, he didn't even cut corners when it came to it—the supercommando dragged himself through it without worrying about it getting into his clothes, hair, or eyes. His mouth full of sand, he stood up and grabbed the nearest warrior to him.

Laying down on his back, he kept his eyes closed as he waited for the water to hit.

Leandros hustled towards the line and, upon seeing Drace get scolded for slowing down, immediately pivoted on his heel and began to move the other way. Koil mentioned something about being slow because he was short, but he blew it off, given that he was a cool five inches taller than the man and taller than most of the others present. He paid no mind to the age comment either, knowing that he was trying to crawl beneath his skin and make him slip up. Instead, Leandros simply spat on the ground and began to mutter a small devotional beneath his breath, using it to control his breathing as well as ignore the pepper spray now seeping into the corners of his eyes. He clenched them shut, relying on his veteran instinct to move between line and flare, doing his allotted burpees when necessary.

He was beginning to slow down towards the end, but, after his most recent set of burpees, Koil instructed them to crawl back to him. Without thinking, Leandros dove forward and began to crawl, kicking sand behind him and clawing his way forward. Sand clung to his body and face, mixing with the pepper spray to make it a significant challenge to see. So, rather than expose his eyes to the pain, he simply scrambled forward until he reached the line. He arrived shortly after Drace, having hustled to pass the others during the relays, and rose, locking arms with the supercommando. ”Purge the weakness from your mind,” he hissed through his teeth as they approached the lake, ”Because if you give up next to me, you’ll wish that the gods drowned you themselves.”

The duo slammed their backs against the cold, matted sand and braced for impact. At least this will wash their faces.
