    Ilum

As they came out of hyperspace, Arda had found herself on the edge of her seat, watching the snowy white world grow in front of them as they approached. Her senses deepened into the Force as she felt the ripples that the world seemed to ebb on its own, as though it were a living being, however, just like the Force, the world felt ancient, there were scars, deep ones that caused her to turn her head as though she heard someone whispering into her left ear. She cupped her ear with her palm, physically testing her hearing, which was still absent and she glanced at Castor, uncertain of how to explain what she just felt.

She focused on herself, centering her mind and breathing as they descending to the planet's surface; she was glad Castor knew where he was going as Arda did not, she was entirely uncertain how she was going to find a lightsaber crystal in such a place. He had told her earlier in the journey not to doubt herself, but she found it difficult when she didn't know the answers to things that she believed she should have known. Arda didn't speak them out loud though; she zipped up her jacket and prepared once more for the nose-biting chill that awaited them outside when Castor landed the ship.

"This world feels odd." Arda finally stated as she waited for Castor, pulling her gloves over her fingers and fixing the collar of her coat to protect as much of her neck as she could. She was still exploring what she felt on the world, "The Force is strong here, but there is something else, like a wound that is still healing." she explained.

Illum was... well Illum was an odd world.

It was cold and it was stormy and icy, much like Hoth, but it was violent in a way that Hoth wasn't. There were lingering darkness on Illum that Hoth simply didn't have. And one Hoth, there were a few creatures that called the cold their home that could be a threat to someone. On Illum?

On Illum there were creatures beyond most people's imagining, sleeping just beneath the surface, waiting to be rediscovered and to be awoken so that they could continue their dark deeds. It was a frightening place for all those who feared the pull of the Dark Side of the Force because it was so clear that the planet had been damaged in the Force - it's life had been scarred by the Dark Side and the 'infection' left behind?

Was the abominations that it's ice kept locked away.

"Illum is a damaged world." he told her quietly, "The Sith, before they were even Sith, caused something here. I don't know what but it killed many, many, Jedi and it tore a wound in the living Force around Illum."

He turned to her as he brought his ship down to the surface.

"But it is one of the few places in the galaxy you can obtain an uncontaminated kyber crystal for use in your lightsaber." he told her as they were coming into the atmosphere, "We can turn back now if you're afraid."

Arda paused, listening to Castor explain what he knew about Ilum, her eyes focused with the intent of absorbing every word he said; she would have to ask him what other stories he had. The youth inside her craved folk tales...or in this case history, a piece of nostalgia from before she witnessed and experienced the oppression of the Empire and it seemed to always find its way to her when she needed it the most. However, as she felt herself drift in her library of stories, she refocused as Castor made a friendly jab, asking her if she was afraid. The girl shook her head, becoming defensive over such an assumption, "N-no! I am not afraid!" she backed up to the door of the ship once they landed, hearing the air in the landing gear decompress, the ship jolting slightly as it came to a stop.

"So how do I find a crystal?" she asked before opening the door to the wind and the snow. The padawan grimaced to the weather, she had never seen such conditions and it made it difficult to see the cave entrance. She climbed out, her boots crunching against the snow as she held her scarf to her face, her eyes burned from the wind as they had to trek across in order to even begin to find the crystal.

However, much to their relief, the elements didn't seem as terribly bad once they had the wind blocked; they could still hear the whistles through the cave and Arda frowned, "It looks empty, Cas." she stepped forward, still brushing the snow off that she had accumulated in their short trip to the cave. Arda turned to look at Cas, pressing her gloves into her pockets as she waited for guidance from her friend.

He had known she would object to the insinuation that she was afraid - it was why he had made the insinuation in the first place. The whole point was to get her to accept it and the only way to accept it was to have someone confront you with it. Castor turned to look at her with cold, calm, eyes when she declared that she wasn't afraid.

"Then you're a fool." he told her bluntly, "There is plenty to be afraid of here, Arda. Things here that can have you claw your own brains out through your ears or tear you into chunks with their bare hands. To be afraid is to acknowledge the dangers that are out there. But... but the difference between a Sith and a Jedi is not in having no fear. It's in what you do with it. A Sith uses it to power themselves. A Jedi... I'm not sure but I think a Jedi accepts that they are afraid and presses on regardless."

Taking out a cigara, Castor held it between his lips but didn't ignite it. It was something of a nervous habit and he knew that it was something he would have to work on removing. He put the cigara away again slowly as they landed and he left the cockpit. Fighting through the snows, Castor didn't answer her question as they pushed forwards through the elements until they reached the relative safety and quiet of the cave.

It was neither quiet nor safe but it was when compared to being outside in the storm itself.

"It's not a cave - it's a tunnel." he told her, raising his lightsaber and igniting it to cast the area in light, showing the hole in the ground that led straight down, "We have to go onward. Onward until you start to hear it - the music on the edge of your hearing. The lightning in your veins... when you start to hear the crystal calling to you."

He turned to look at her.

"It doesn't know that you're here yet. But it will and it will call for you." he held out his shoto saber for her to take, "Take this. Use it to light your way - you must go down first."

When Cas had finally joined her he had out his saber, the red glowed eerily along the walls of the entrance and along the groves of his clothing and face. Arda listened carefully as he explained how one usually found their crystal, her brow furrowed with curiosity as she never heard of anything singing. Then again, she could hear the Force's whispers in her deaf ear. He motioned it was not a cave, and saw the hole in the ground and turned to look at him with an eyebrow arched in skepticism, however, she didn't say anything, his super seriousness was kind of a killjoy as she took the shoto and glanced back at the tunnel.

Slowly she approached as he mentioned she needed to go first and Arda sat on the ledge, igniting the shoto to see if she saw a bottom, but it was nearly impossible to see anything. The girl took a deep breath and placed her trust in the Force, the light glowed within her as she would let it further guide her actions, "Last one down is a rotting mynock." she said pushing herself off the ledge, quickly descending into the hole and she was met with the icy chill of water as it splashed around her. Arda gasped as she broke the surface, the water was surprisingly deep and the girl ignited the shoto again, the red blade flickered, but it emitted enough light to see the edge of the water and she quickly made her way over, shivering as she got out of the water.

"Cas!" she heard her voice echo, but could barely see anything, her body shivered again, she needed to get moving, "Find a different way down Cas!" she called again and followed along the rocky path until she found another tunnel leading further inside. Arda took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, feeling herself gain a little more control over the chill that seemed to infest her body and her head became clear on what she needed to do. Trust in the Force...

The light glowed within her as she followed another maze of tunnels further inside.

Arda dropped down into the pitch blackness of the hole and there was soon a splashing sound as the other Jedi Padawan landed in some water. Rather a lot of water by the sounds of it actually. Leaning over the hole, Castor looked down into the darkness and he could feel her in the Force.

    She was alright.

Which meant that he was probably okay to admit this next bit.

"Just in the interest of transparency..." he called down to her with a small smirk, "I've never actually been to this part of Illum before so... good luck!"

Each journey to gather the crystal was supposed to be unique after all. He could have taken her to where he had collected his own crystal but that would have defeated the whole purpose. She was here to collect her own crystal, not to go to the birthplace of his own. But she was right though, Castor was going to need to keep pressing on himself because despite wanting her to do it mostly by herself?

He wasn't exactly happy with the idea of leaving her to face this trial entirely alone.

Using the Force, Castor blasted some of the rocks at the back wall apart, revealing more of a tunnel for him to walk through, above Arda. Stepping into the new area, Castor immediately knew that something was wrong. He immediately knew that he had probably just made a terrible mistake. With no other option, Castor stepped forward into the tunnel with his lightsaber raised high and the light of his lightsaber illuminated a much large cavern than the previous one.

With a creature of rock and kyber crystals stirring from centuries of slumber.

It was larger than he could ever hope to be - towering over him by at least three times. In the center there was a shell of a creature that may once have been a man before the Dark Side got to him. Before the darkest of arts were used to form the man into this abomination.

Castor took a deep breath before calmly tapping his com link.

    "Please hurry, Arda."

By the time Castor had called down the tunnel, Arda could barely hear him and shook her head as another chill ran through her body. She needed to move and she hoped to find the crystal before she came down with hypothermia. Her comm crackled with Castor asking her to hurry and Arda huffed, she thought these things took time, it wasn't something that could be rushed, but then again, she was unaware of the creature that Castor had found in the cave above her. The tunnel began to grow wider as she continued, she was uncertain what exactly she was searching for and looked at the shoto, frowning in its red glow. The girl toggled the switch and turned it off and clipped the weapon onto her belt.

"Trust in the Force..." she reminded herself and the girl stood still, inhaling deeply and releasing a long breath as she opened herself to the Force. Her senses reach outward, the world felt alive underground and she took a gentle step forward, listening as she allowed herself to be guided. She couldn't explain the sensations, they felt like vibrations, but they weren't, she could best describe them as ripples and there was one that seemed to resonate louder than the others and it rang in both ears. Arda grasped onto the thread and followed, the tunnel eventually gave way to a larger cave, stones bluntly cut from the natural forming enclosure; there was a light source leaking from somewhere, a whistle from the outside winds could be heard as she continued onward, but paused as she realized the cave floor suddenly dropped away.

The padawan frowned and carefully made her way to the side of the cave, cautiously reaching out to grasp the jagged edges of the wall as she begun to make her way across to the other side. Suddenly she realized how much her climbing around on Corellia finally was going to pay off. One hand and one foot at a time, she carefully moved, the crystal's thread was still strong, its song wisping across the Force in waves.

Castor had no idea what Arda was doing.

He hoped that she was doing her best to grab a crystal so that they could get the hell out of there... but he wasn't sure and he didn't have an option of checking. Instead he was busy with the beast who had decided that it would very much prefer it if he were to stop breathing. The creature roared a deep roar before charging forwards at him. It's intention was to sweep him up off of his feet and slam him into the wall with all of it's weight and momentum.

Thankfully it wasn't very smart and it basically broadcast this thought both through it's movements and in the Force as well - allowing Castor plenty of time to react. Of course there were only so many ways you could react when you learn that a tonne or two of rock and crystal was thundering towards you.

Cursing under his breath, Castor dove to one side, rolling to try and put more distance between himself and the creature. It didn't take too kindly to this and grabbed a nearby rock before throwing it.

And that rock was actually a boulder roughly twice the size of Castor and it was thrown as if it weighed nothing more than a frisbee.

This...? This was not going to be a good day.

Castor flatted himself to let the rock sail over his head and he relaxed for a bare second before he felt the hand grab him by the left foot.

    "... kark."

The roar echoed through all the corridors of the cave and tunnels that connected to each other and Arda paused, listening carefully to decide how near the creature was who made that noise. Her brow furrowed, and she let out a sigh in her thoughts, but continued onward until she reached a tunnel opening. Water trickled from the ledge as she reached out to feel the icy liquid against her finger tips. Carefully she started to climb up some until she was able to reach around and pull herself inside the tunnel. She couldn't stand all the way and crouched for a moment as she listened for the crystal's call. There was a pull and she knew she was going the correct route as she followed along the small stream, the tunnel becoming narrower and she eventually was forced to crawl on her hands and knees until she reached the other side.

Climbing out, she looked onto the large underground lake; jagged stones jutted from it's center and as Arda approached, the lake itself was so still, it looked as though it could be glass. The padawan knelt down and reached into the water and then back at the center island of stones. Her crystal was there, she could hear its song, but she was not certain enough to cross the lake. She didn't know what laid in the waters, not to mention it was ice cold and the depth was hard to determine. The girl tapped her comm, "Cas, I think I found it..." she spoke softly, but with the distance between them, her message would come in crackles.

Arda stepped gently into the water, the ripples extended until she could see them no more and she tread through, the water rising slowly and seemed to stay steady at her knees until her next step as cautious as it were, she felt herself go under. The water was entirely too cold and made it hard to focus, the air wanting to leave her lungs immediately from the shock of the cold. She felt disorientated as she scrambled to break the surface of the water, fear and panic begun to grip her heart and her thoughts as she wondered if she were going to drown, alone in a cave where Castor would never find her. She felt the bubbles rush against her face as she exhaled what she could, the song of her crystal still hummed loudly drawing her attention to follow and with a gasp, Arda reached the surface, coughing as she quickly regained her sense of direction.

She hoped Castor wasn't having too hard of a time sitting and waiting for her.

Castor was not having a good day.

The creature had captured his left foot and it was not going to be deterred. While Arda was having one of the defining moments of her life, Castor was dangling upside down as the creature held him aloft easily in one hand. It roared at him and Castor couldn't resist the urge to roar back at the creature.

Honestly, it seemed that his audacity surprised the creature and that split second of not being slammed into the ground? That was just what he needed to retaliate. Stabbing upwards with his lightsaber, he stabbed the creature in the wrist. He expected to be released because of the pain.

He did not expect the creature to actually laugh.

It was Castor's turn to be surprised as the creature used his lack of a response to toss him bodily across the cavern. Castor let out a grunt of pain as his back slammed against the stone wall before he fell forwards onto his hands and knees. He spat some blood out onto the cavern floor as he looked back at the creature.

It had his lightsaber still impaled in it's wrist.

Castor pulled himself to his feet slowly... he wasn't about to let some lumps of rock beat him.

Arda had reached the center island and begun to climb upwards, carefully searching for the crystal that was calling to her. She was soaked to her bones and she wanted more than ever to find the crystal and get someplace warm. However, she felt the more she thought about anything but the crystal, the longer it was taking her to search for it; her mind ran with several thoughts, she could feel herself being pulled to what Castor was doing, how she was overall feeling, and if there were any dangers in the cave. She reached a ledge and pulled herself over, sitting for a moment as she starred at the dark shadows of stone, but nothing stuck out to her as a lightsaber crystal. The padawan sighed, this was a test and though she had started out well, she was finding she was faltering behind.

A sigh escaped her lips, echoing through the cave as she closed her eyes, listening for the crystal's song, her thoughts settled as she focused, feeling her shoulders relax, followed by her arms, and legs. Her mind seemed to clear itself as she gave herself to the Force; Arda listened and felt, in the distance there was turmoil, but she didn't explore further as she stood up. She could see the crystal's glow without physically seeing it. It was illuminated in the Force, tucked away as it had waited for her to pluck it from its resting place.

The padawan opened her eyes and climbed a bit further, inching her way around the steep ledges of stone as she saw the opaque crystal nested in the dark stone. She reached out, feeling it come loose in her grasp as examined her accomplishment for a moment with a grin. Pocketing the crystal she made her way back around before jumping back into the icy waters; it wasn't any better the second time, but this time she held more control over her sense of direction as she reached the edge of the lake and climbed out, tracing her steps until she came back to the canyon knowing she would have to cross it again.

She tapped on her comm, but the device buzzed and clicked in protest, damaged from the water and now unable to communicate with Cas. Arda frowned as she begun to climb across, her thoughts stretched outward in the Force, letting Cas know she was coming.

"This is why no one does geology!"

Cursing, Castor ducked under a wild swing from the arm of the rock monster, once again not being able to grab his saber before it passed him by. Throwing himself into a roll, he avoided a follow up punch that saw the monster slam the wall of the cavern rather than smacking Castor flat. The creature roared in actual pain and that was, surprisingly, music to Castor's ears.

If the damned thing still felt pain then Castor had a chance!

Charging forwards, he waited until the very last second before leaping upwards with the assistance of the Force, flying above the rock creature. Reaching out with the Force, he pulled his blade to his hand in mid air as he spun upon his decent, slashing down the back of the rock creature.

    It roared in pain.

Rather than ducking fully under it's retaliatory swing of it's fist, Castor kept his lightsaber up and let the creature's own momentum cut through it's wrist, sending it's hand flying off into the distance. Grinning, keen to capitalize, Castor stopped short as he watched crystals grow out of the stump, forcing a blade with an edge he just KNEW could block a lightsaber.

At least Arda was coming back up.

    "You get lost down there?"

It was just as difficult going across as it was on the way back as she focused on not falling to her fate in the canyon below her. However, what was easier was knowing the task of finding her crystal was complete and she just needed to get back to the ship in order to warm up. It took an extended amount of effort not to lose her muscle control to the shivering she was experiencing, her fingers and toes ached from being so cold, but as she planted her foot on the solid ledge, she felt a rush of adrenaline. The roar that she heard earlier was definitely louder and instead of going back the way she came, Arda's attention was directed upward to the mouth of a tunnel, dimly light by a red glow.

"Cas..." Arda whispered and the padawan quickly climbed, reaching the tunnel's edge and thankful she didn't have to trek through any more water. However, when she reached the ledge and saw the creature that had accompanied Castor, her jaw fell agape, she had never seen such a beast, made of rock and crystal and when he turned, the girl had to do a double take. She couldn't believe what she was seeing, but it certainly was getting the best of Cas. The girl scrambled up, getting to her feet in time for Castor to ask her if she had gotten lost. Without a reply she ignited the shoto, catching the attention of the creature as ran towards it, keeping low as she managed to cut through its stone foot.

It let out a defiant and especially angry yell, falling to its knee as it tried to catch the padawan before she could escape, but she was swift as she scrambled to get away from the abomination. It slammed down its crystal bladed arm, nearly taking the girl's foot.

"Time to go!" she told Castor, pulling herself up next to him as the crystal beast let out another roar. It began to slam its body against the walls of the tunnel, knocking some stones loose, but it would be clear it was trying to keep the two with them.

A part of Castor wanted to stay, wanted to kill the creature, but he ignored it. The important part of today had been accomplished and Arda had the crystal that would become her lightsaber and that was really all that mattered. All that mattered going forward was that both of them survived and escaped the wrath of the stone and crystal golem. Killing the creature was not required and it was the Jedi way to always choose to take the path that would preserve life.

Sometimes that meant that lives needed to be taken, but often there was simply no reason for the taking of a life - even one as obviously twisted as this one.

So while he wanted to fight and kill the creature, Castor was compelled to run instead. Seeing that Arda had almost been sliced by the Crystal Golem, Castor wasted no time in extinguishing his lightsaber and charging forwards. Scooping Arda up in a bridal carry, he leaped through the small hole to the main cave and used the Force to give him speed to dash through the storm to his shuttle. He slipped a little bit in the ice but managed to keep Arda held aloft.

The Crystal Golem was not far behind them but they were already home free inside the shuttle now. Groaning in relieve, Castor set Arda down and immediately began to take off. It wouldn't take long for them to begin hovering too high off the ground for their enemy to actually reach them.

With the immediate danger passed, Castor stood from the pilot's seat and moved over to Arda. He was breathing heavily and he was just glad that the two of them were alive. The idea that the two of them could have died spurred him on and he drew closer to her, staring down into her eyes.

    "Arda..."

Looking down into her eyes, Castor reached up and took her chin lightly in his hand. He leaned her head back slightly before leaning in. Castor was by no means an authority on this kind of thing but he knew how to kiss a woman.

His lips touched hers and it felt unlike any other kiss he'd ever experienced.

He broke the kiss and took half a step back. For a moment he looked flushed before he spoke.

"... sorry. Just, adrenaline and... realizing our mortality, you know?" He looked awkwardly to one side, "It um... it doesn't have to mean anything if you don't want it to."

Arda suddenly found herself weightless as Castor scooped her up in his arms, carrying her as he dashed out of the cave with the golem quickly behind. She was a bit confused as to why he was carrying her, "I can run!" she yelled out over the wind, but he knew she could run, she probably could still outrun him and perhaps that was something he wasn't willing to risk if she got back to the ship before he did. Regardless, she was ready to make the rest of the trip as soon as her feet would touch the ground, especially when he slipped, but he didn't drop her, not until they had gotten on the ship did he set her down.

She was shaking from the cold and as Castor went to the cockpit, Arda searched for a blanket, wrapping herself tightly as the ship took off as she tried to warm herself as quickly as she could. The padawan reached into her pocket and pulled out the crystal, its song chimed as she watched it shimmer in the soft glow of the ship's illuminators; she was uncertain of how long she was looking at her crystal, but the danger of the Golem and hopefully anything else lurking on Ilum had passed. She saw Castor rise from the pilot's seat and the girl sat up straight, grasping the crystal tightly and stood up when Cas approached, he was breathing heavy and looked distracted, naturally, Arda reached out with the Force and as he stopped just in front of her.

His spoke and Arda grinned in humor, "What?" her own eyes locked on his, never really realizing he was getting closer until their lips touched. Arda closed her eyes, her cheeks reddened and suddenly the ship felt a lot warmer than she remembered. She didn't want him to stop, in all that has happened to her, there was the briefest moment of peace and she was almost disappointed when he finally broke away.

He looked flustered when he spoke, apologizing for the occurrence and Arda smiled, "It can mean I've slowed down enough to keep up with you?" she shrugged, unable to hide her grin as she felt her cheeks now turn bright red, "If you want..." she scratched her head, trying not to get her fingers tangled in her wet hair as she glanced away, "But! Look! You wouldn't believe where I found it." she told him holding up her lightsaber crystal, "Was yours difficult to find?" Arda asked, switching topics to help him feel less embarrassed.

It seemed that Castor had surprised Arda as well as himself with that. He wasn't sure what made him go in for the kiss but he was glad that he had - he enjoyed it. In fact it was kind of alarming just how much he wanted to do it again. But he didn't want the two of them to go too far before they were ready just because they had been in a tense situation together. Relationships based on those kinds of situations never tended to end well.

He chuckled a little bit and he had trouble finding words to actually say. Why was it that he was absolutely fine talking to her one minute but the second he kissed her, he turned into some kind of blushing, flushed, mess? He didn't know but he did know that he was happy enough for things to continue moving forwards at this kind of pace. Castor was comfortable with this kind of pace he was beginning to realize.

"Yeah I think I'd like that." he admitted honestly with a small smile, "I think I like where we're heading and the pace we're moving at now."

Castor grinned upon seeing the crystal she had collected. To him it felt like it could hold the Force but other than that it didn't feel like anything special - but he knew that was because it wasn't his crystal. It didn't feel special to him because it wasn't special to him, it was special to her.

"What, did you have to go climbing for it or something?" he teased her before admitting, "Mine? Oh mine were rather easy to find. When you come here with the Sith academy they bring heavy explosives."

    He wished he was joking.

He teased about her having to climb for it and her own smile disappeared as she opened her mouth to interrupt him while he went on about the Sith just using heavy explosives. She thought he was joking about that part, however, the tone and the look on his face told her otherwise.

"I did have to climb in fact and swim through the coldest waters." Arda glanced away, her thoughts pulling on the questions on why it was so difficult to obtain such a small object. She knew its value and what it would bring for her as a Jedi, "Cross a canyon too..." both eyebrows raised as she slowly turned the crystal between her thumb and forefinger. She observed it for a moment, hearing its song ring and wondered if other Jedi were able to hear it also. She didn't think Cas could, not by the way he looked at it when she presented it, but if she didn't find it, would other jedi have?

"Its odd really." she told Cas, opening her palm to use the Force to slowly turn the crystal above her hand, "Out of all the stones, this one I heard and I knew it was right because I could hear it in my bad ear also." she flashed a small smile, glancing at Castor before looking back at the crystal. She collapsed her fingers around the crystal and then placed the sone in her pocket once more. She would build her lightsaber at some point, but she knew it would not be this day. A chill ran through her body and silently she cursed all the cold worlds they had visited so far. "I'm so cold, Tatooine sounds nice." she humored and stepped away from Castor, though she enjoyed his closeness, she craved heat as she curled up on top of the storage crate next to a heating vent.

"Maybe pick somewhere that doesn't require five layers." she told him, hiding partially in the blanket, "Maybe back to Al'doleem, it's not freezing there. Plus maybe we'll get back for our Masters figured out where we went." she suggested, grinning.

Seemed that Arda had actually had to struggle to obtain her crystal... which honestly kind of made him feel bad considering he himself had not actually tried very hard at all. When you were a Sith in the academy, the instructors would have you point out the direction and then explosives and other gadgets would be used to get them closer to the crystal in question. Was it cheating? Absolutely.

    Did anyone seem to care?

    Not so much.

When you were going to immediately dominate and subjugate the crystal anyway, it wasn't as though you really cared if the Force thought you were worthy of it in the end. Looking at the crystal that she rotated in her hand with the Force, Castor couldn't say that it looked all that special to him but again - that was the point.

The kyber crystal that was hers, the one that she would bond with, was her's and her's alone. It wouldn't make sense for him to resonate with it as well unless there was some kind of deep connection to them in the Force - a Force Bond or being closely related. He smiled a little bit.

"Well just don't make the mistake I made." he told her quietly, tapping the side of her hand, "Let it sing and bond with it. Don't dominate it as I did mine - they scream. It's... it's a betrayal."

He chuckled a little bit and nodded.

"Al'doleem it is." he confirmed, "I hear our Masters will likely have new missions for us - maybe they'll be fun?"
