Commenor. Positioned on two semi-growing hyperlanes and one long-time trade out. Tucked in the fold of the Colonies, barely out of reach from the Core. Covered in a vast assortment of mountain ranges, canyons, narrow oceans and grand deserts. Ruled under an unusual blend of corporations, oligarchs and trade guilds. The planet was much like Brentaal, although farther from the Republic and far lesser known. Still, the world was one Nicolás, Senator of Brentaal, found remarkably cozy. In truth, he relished in every moment on the planet surface, as if he was back on his own homeworld, roaming the streets, sifting through the markets, chatting with the locals. If only that was indeed the truth.

Nicolás had been virtually exiled from his world. After posing a threat to the firstborn heir of House Cormond, his father had appointed him to become the Republic representative of Brentaal, ultimately tearing away whatever chances he had of inheriting his father’s wealth and fortune. His power base in the courts was shredded apart and his contacts on the planet scattered. There was nothing for him there but the disapproval of his father, who still refused to answer his calls. The older man was intent on ignoring Nicolás for the rest of his life. Even if the position of Senator was not always a permanent one, he figured his father would make it as such. There was no escaping his fate with the Republic.

Of course, Nicolás had to keep his head held high and his eyes forward. There had to be some way to regain his lost authority, some way to rebuild his power base and become the infamous Nicolás Cormond he was before. Fortunately, there was. For a while now, the young man had been meeting with an endless slew of Senators across the Republic, desperate to get them on his side, hoping to gain both their trust and potential loyalty. While he did not demand their instant servitude, he was praying to at least establish a mutually beneficial relationship. Like friends with benefits, but without the sex. Well, most of the time. Nicolás was not above a little behind-the-door action as long as it gave him what he wanted, be it power, control or satisfaction. Although something told him Alicya Nyx was not one of those people.

She was smart, pretty, and generous. Having donated a chunk of her family’s fortune to the poor and impoverished, it was clear Senator Nyx was a woman of high regard. Most of time, Nicolás would find that annoying, as he typically despised such holier-than-thou politicians. But if rumor was true, her underlying problem with anxiety made a fitting opportunity. Perhaps he could charm her, maybe he could convince her to fall into his embrace and become a finishing piece to his puzzle. He could help her— as long as she helped him. Whatever would happen, however, was completely up to her.

After several moments of weaving through the crowds in a bustling market street, it didn’t take Nicolás long to spot the woman. She was outside, surrounded by a number of other planetary politicians and media photographers. The Senator was no doubt giving out food or credits to the poor in the city streets, doing it all before the photographers lurking behind her so they caught her in the act of such charity. Nicolás almost scoffed, but if she really was stooping that low, he couldn’t judge. Because he did the same exact thing. Then again, perhaps she was being serious about aiding the poor, which would only be worse. Regardless, Nicolás quickly approached her, and the strangers around her parted like a wave as he did. They knew he was: the Senator of Brentaal, here to speak with their own.

He gave one of his classic smiles as another camera flashed. “Senator Nyx. Funny seeing you here.” Of course, it was far funnier for him to be there at all, given this was her homeworld. Still, it was no coincidence. She should have known he was coming by then, although she might not have expected him to arrive in the middle of the public.

Alicya did like a little publicity, after all, it was important for a Senator to have a large public presence on your own world, after all, being a Senator was never a permanent position and Alycia was determined to make this her job as long as possible. Unlike Nicolas, Alycia actually enjoyed being out of the corporate field as she was destined to be in since she was younger. All she was expected to do since she was younger was to take over a corporation and continue the business into the future. So unlike Nicholas, she enjoyed the fact that her family had no control over what she would do in her future.

However, Alicya also enjoyed the fact that she could connect with people from all sorts of backgrounds, despite her upper-class status. She often found herself connecting and gaining a good reputation with the lower and middle class populous, which she often gained due to her relief efforts and the fact that she donated a vast amount of her money to charities as well as occasionally going out in person to help their efforts. Which was what she was doing today.

What she didn't exactly expect was the media being out and about to document her work and her charitable efforts, however she was happy that she at least looked nice and not too over the top that it was inappropriate for the occasion. Plus it would bring in some good publicity. However what Alycia didn't expect was a fellow senator to show.

"Why hello there Senator Cormond, funny, I was just about to say the same thing."
She walked over to him, before leading him away from the paparazzi and also motioning to the rest of her staff that she was stepping away for a little while. "So what brings you to Commenor Nicolas? Not that I'm complaining of course." She spoke softly, with an almost knowing smile on her face as she led him down the street and through the sea of people. After all, she was sure that he wasn't here for the relief efforts.

Alycia Nyx was definitely unlike most Senators. He had read and heard enough about the young woman that he knew she was not much of the cutthroat or the expressionless type. From the gorgeous blue dress she flaunted to her surprising round of pleasantries, Nicolás knew he was going to like her. Senator Adasca was unforgiving and Senator Faunus was self-righteous, but Senator Nyx seemed to act as a perfect balance. Their conversation was only just beginning, and the young man figured he could have her play into his hands with the snap of a finger, or better yet, another flash of a smile. The fact that she wholeheartedly welcomed his unexpected arrival was a testament to that.

Well, that’s quite the question, Senator Nyx.” His head inclined as if he was momentarily conceding to her. “You don’t mind if I cal you Alycia, do you? It’s such a pretty name.” He smiled, already working his flattery and charm only moments into their discussion. Regardless of her answer, Nicolás would continue, “And that’s a good question. There are a great many things that have brought me to Commenor. A moment of peace away from the capital, or the hope that I might finally meet you in person, or because I want to revel in a world much like my own, Brentaal.” His eyes drifted off to the side, feigning a sense of melancholy, a sign that something was bothering him deep down. There was nothing like playing the pity card that could get someone instantly on his side. But he would save that for later.

What about you, Senator? I see you’re still roaming the city streets, smiling to passing civilians or into the lens of a camera. Are you worried about reelection, or better yet, a recall?” He nearly scoffed, but with a feeling of warmth and understanding. “I wouldn’t worry too much. You look best in the spotlight, and from what I’ve heard, you always look for the best in people, in your people. You care about Commenor, as I do for Brentaal. That is why we are appointed into these positions, and often why we stay. Wouldn’t you agree?” While the pair were secluded, it was clear some of the media Nyx’s staff was attempting to preoccupy was starting to get a load of their surprise meeting. Not that he cared, and neither should she. After all, she was discussing with the Senator of an economic powerhouse. That would certainly turn some heads if they believed she was looking to bolster Commenor’s trade.

As for Nicolás, at least the other Senators might see him in a different light. He was meeting with one of the most philanthropic politicians in the Republic, if not working with her side by side. Even if their makeshift negotiations came to nothing, at least the two would gain some neat publicity out of it.

Alycia knew that the man must of had a motive to arrive un-anncounced to Commenor, expecting her to drop everything to accomodate their meeting, and he was exactly right. She had left to do business with this senator abandoning all of her other plans for the night. Oh well, she would entertain her guest for as long as she saw fit, after all, it would most likely be an enjoyable experience even if it was only for business. "You are more than welcome to call me that." Alycia gave a small grin in response.

"I haven't had the luxury of traveling to Brenthaal, maybe you could show me around, after all, I've heard its beautiful to visit." Alycia commented thoughtfully, looking at Nicholas out the corner of her eye, judging his response to her comment quietly. However Alycia did notice that the fleeting look of sadness on Nicholas's face, disappearing as quickly as it appeared. "Are you alright Nicholas?" Alycia asked politely, showing concern for her fellow senator's feelings. Something wasn't right but Alycia couldn't put a finger on what was going through her fellow Senator's head.

However, what she didn't really expect was Nicholas's comment on the fact that she was out of the office helping those who needed it. The way that Nicholas said it though was almost sarcastic and annoying, like she was being fake. "Perception is important in our job, you should know that as a fellow senator after all. Despite the fact that I may want to help out with those who need it, it is still important to keep up a media image. After-all, a bad story could kill a career like ours." She stated thoughtfully, an almost seriousness layered in her voice. "You're not so bad looking in the camera lense either Nicholas" Alycia joked, motioned to the sea of reporters and photographers which were being kept at bay by her staff. "So are you here on business or just came here for a short holiday? If it's the later, I am more than happy to point you to the best tourist spots." Alycia smiled walking down the busy highstreet, many onlookers looking onwards.

He was glad to hear the Senator welcomed the thought of being called Alycia. Not because he was tired of having her by her political title and surname, or because Nyx didn’t roll off the tongue for him. In truth, it meant that the pair could connect a little closer, it meant that they were one step further from their professional attitudes. That was exactly how Nicolás wanted it: to befriend the Senator, then to appeal to her for an alliance, rather than vice versa. It was better, easier, and more convincing that way. While referring to each other by their first names might seem inconsequential, it was still a baby step toward what the Senator of Brentaal wanted from her: a partner, a friend. Such were rare things in the Republic, especially for him.

Regardless, he felt a tinge of discomfort by her next remark. Although he figured she must have had no idea about his current situation with Brentaal, it still felt like she was taunting him. There was no way he could just tour her like she could with Commenor. Nicolás was banished, exiled. Sure, there was no public decree that he could never return, but implication was there. His father didn’t want him there, and if he didn’t, neither did the courts of Brentaal. He could return, but he would never be welcomed back like any Senator, any son, should. Still, Nicolás was not willing to admit that just yet, and instead, he waved his hand dismissively and smiled. “There’s no need, Alycia. Brentaal is almost no different from Commenor. My world is just a little more lacking in courtesy.

I am not on very good terms with my family, you see.” The Senator admitted, only to shrug it off like it meant nothing to him, when in fact, it did. “But enough of that. I’m sure you hadn’t stopped your own public interview just to hear me vent. There are always more important matters to discuss.” He flashed another smile. “But thank you. You’re too kind, Alycia.” Voice like silk, he inclined his head with a sense of gratitude to her sudden compliment and underlying generosity. The young woman was a lot friendlier than many other Senators he had met in the past, which he found remarkably surprising, and endearing. Almost for a moment, he had forgotten why he was really here. Fortunately, Alycia was also kind enough to remind him.

Ah, yes. How about all of the above?” He chuckled softly, admitting that he had come both to revel in Commenor’s nostalgic views and for political business. “I’m sure you know by now that I’m not here to speak with you just about our own worlds and people and other aimless pleasantries. I’m mostly here for you, Alycia.Nicolás stopped himself short of winking. He really was here for her, but he didn’t want to start going full seductive mode just yet. There was no telling whether or not she would welcome it.

Alycia found the fact that Nicholas didn't seem to encourage the idea of Alycia visiting his homeplane odd. How could someone not want to show off their planet to a foreign diplomat? After all, there were a multitude of reasons why that would be a benefit. However, Alycia wouldn't have to wonder why for so long until Nicholas stated that he had a very rocky relationship with his family. Even still, that was quite sad that their relationship was so bad that Nicholas couldn't even go back to his homeworld. And Alycia thought that her family were bad. After all, she abandoned the company that her family had created, hell Alycia was destined for that role. Yet she ignored her destiny, choosing the role of a senator. She knew her family didn't approve of it, hell, they tried to fund her opposition! "Me and my family have a rough relationship as well, luckily not in the same way that your folks. After all, isn't your dad the head of your house?" Alycia asked curiously, wondering if that was truely the reason that he couldn't go back to Brentaal. An unofficial exile.

"If you ever need a place to call home, don't let the people of Commenor be strangers. We welcome people with open arms!"
Alycia stated, genuinely concerned for the man. However when the man decided that he came here for her, Alycia was very curious. Was it business that he wanted to discuss or was it just a pitstop to evaluate whether she would be necessary to use her as an ally. "Well what is it you wish to discuss Senator?" Alycia asked. After all, if she could find something that both she and the man could agree on, maybe she would be able to work in a deal between the worlds. After all, Commenor needed friends in this political climate.

Yes, yes he is.” He answered to her first question, mind drifting back to the face of his father, the past, his childhood. There was little to say of it. While he was a bastard to House Cormond, he was still his father’s son, and was spared of any expense when it came to his education or his livelihood. The finest tutors, the best universities, the most expensive lifestyles. Everything was his— until it wasn’t. The moment Nicolás set his eyes onto his father’s place, to become heir of House Cormond, he was deemed a threat and “sentenced” to become the Senator of Brentaal. Even now, his other brother would continue to be groomed and primed to inherit his House. The Senator might be his father’s son, but it seemed he would never be enough in his eyes.

That was why he plotted. Why he schemed. Why Nicolás sought to take every step needed to regain his place on Brentaal and oust his father himself. If he wouldn’t give up House Cormond, then he would make him give it up. Of course, he couldn’t do it alone. Why else would he have been going around, seeking to influence and persuade other Senators onto his side? He was desperate, ruthless, relentless. Yet still, he could not help but find himself surprised by Alycia’s unexpected kindness. That smile, the genuine concern, her offer that Commenor would always be there when needed. He blinked, almost taken aback. After a moment of wondering, he finally managed: “Well, thank you, Alycia. You are… too kind, really. I will be sure to keep that in mind.” He gave a thin smile. A smile more genuine than any other before. By the Force— was he starting to actually like her?

Preposterous. He couldn’t. Nicolás, the cutthroat merchant and brazen Senator, could never. As enticing and comforting her offer was, he could not afford comfort. He would have to crawl through the muck and from hell and back again if he wanted to become the head of House Cormond. His focus had to remain forward— beyond the generosity of the young woman before him. His eyes were set on the prize. All it would take was convincing Senator Nyx to aid him in his strike against his family. But there was little time for talk. Instead, Nicolás knew to opt for the better, the faster, option: the gala. It was there that he could win her over, to make her believe that his father was truly the enemy. Today was just a taste of what was soon to come. And he knew, given the woman’s proclivity for the flashing lights and cameras, there was no resisting a party for the ages.

There are so many things I want to discuss with you, Alycia.” He said, only to bow his head apologetically. “But alas, I know you are a busy woman.” He glanced to the nearby media, who were finally starting to break through her staff, ready to swarm the pair with questions. “As am I. That is why I’d like you to come to a gala, a charity ball, I have planned. I have invited a wide array of prominent Senators, if not the whole Senate, and I am sure you will have an absolute blast there.” A knowing smile. “So, please. Do come. I would love to have you there to stand by my side. As allies— as friends.”
