Is the SWG really fit?

This is pretty straight forward question. I was just wondering if the Star Wars Galaxy is really fit for RPing considering the vastness of it. I mean with the space battles, space travel, and galaxy vastness (Anything could be out there).

Even though I'm officially resigned, my brother has a theory about this. He basically says that the best and most detailed RPs are on one planet, or a system. Especially if you're using Free Form Personal RP, and Regulated Military RP. This relates to the concept that you only write what you know, and in our experience as human beings we only know a planet and at the most, a system. Even in Star Wars, if you boil it down is essentially a world. However there are large ramifications because all you're doing is scaling up a world.

Also, there are large limitations when you're staying inside of someone else's continuity.

I think that we need to bring about some kind of ability for our players to get involved in large scale battles, when done right they are fun.

But something like lord of the rings would be easier to rp. There are various little tidbits in the books that could branch off into anything in a similar way to star wars but I feel they could be taken further because there is no EU in lotr

I don't know too much about SWG. I'd like to play it to find out if it is any good, but I don't beleive in paying for a game, and then paying to play the damn game (one reason i play guild wars). SWG does look like a game where you can roleplay, but only to a certain extent.

I put homebrew because I'd love to create my own world to RP in, most likely some kind of modern RP with superheroes and such.
